Sanyo M9990 Help!
thebeardedlady - 2011-09-07 06:56
Hi,
Iv decided to take apart, hopefully fix and clean my sanyo after its been sat on a shelf for weeks gathering more dust! Im still new to this so need a little help. Here are the problems with it;
Record button does not stay down when pressed,
Tape Player not working (inside i can see that the bands etc are not right, does anyone know how it should be set up?)
No noise from the tuner at all. (the slider moves along but it does not pick up anything/the lights dont work)
How do i get it apart to look at all this stuff? I have taken off the back cover but i can not seem to disconnect all the circuits to get at the tape deck.
Any help would be much appreciated!!

I dont know if it does an odd trick like my crown, switch it to tuner and press play on the tape, dont ask me why but thats how you start the radio on the crown.
As to the bands you proberly mean belts, they may need changing if they arent sitting right, I cant help you with how to take it apart, you might find a free to download manual if you put it into google.
thebeardedlady - 2011-09-07 08:40
Yeah i mean belts. Ther looks to be one or two missing! I have a service manual that i got from someone on download but its not terribly helpful.

Update.
I have got it totally apart so now the deep clean can begin! Anyone know how to get the chrome (and fragile!) dust caps all clean and shiny, they seem really stained?!
sega - 2011-09-07 09:52
They might be pitted as opposed to stained, my Hitachis buttons are like that.
If they are that way then there is a trick that Ive notice some have done which is use this foil like metal stuff to re-cover the buttons.
thebeardedlady - 2011-09-07 10:04
Yeah I would say pitted actually on closer inspection. Its kinda black dots/circles, it looks like the chrome has come off or something. I'll just clean it as best I can, its not terribly bad!

Cheers for the help so far! This is what has been acheived:
Cleaned and Shiny,
Speaker cones darkened,
Grills resprayed,
Clock working,
Record button working,
Things still to do:
Belts,
Tuner still works occasionally so that needs looked at,
and whatever else I can think of....
sega - 2011-09-08 12:57
With the tuner it is proberly just bad electrical contact, it proberly just wants a spray of contact cleaner.
thebeardedlady - 2011-09-08 13:04
What do I spray for the tuner? I gave all the knobs and switches a spray and it worked a treat for everything else!
sega - 2011-09-08 13:21
Well anything where there is electrical contact, one of the others may be able to tell you which parts need the attention.

Does anyone know anything about the quartz lcd clock on the sanyo? It works when an aa battery is installed but not if there is no battery and its pugged into the wall...Is this correct?
sega - 2011-09-09 07:54
I think so, my Hitachi did the same although the display has had it on mine.

Guess so...
Here; Sanyo M 9990 Plugged Mine in to mains wall power, Switched on Radio, clock working with battery installed, then while still on, removed battery for clock and watched the Time display just fade away! Reinstalled battery for clock and clock and all of it's function worked again, unplugged radio - it died - no battery's installed for the boombox; just the clock is still working

Nice to see the inside of the 9990. Just finished servicing my three 9994's and they share the same design.

This is correct as the Sanyo M9990 has RCA's in & Out
They are "only" for the recording mode of the tape deck. The RCA's are NOT for playing your source through the speakers as there is no selector switch on the unit to provide this function, of "Line-in" to play through from your outside source. Many people buy this boombox seeing the input&output rca's and believe that they can input their outside source through this radio, no this cannot happen unless you go through the tape cassette deck recording circuit, sorry.

I didn't know that. That's a shame. Nice boxes otherwise.
