Clairtone 7980 sound issue
rockit - 2011-11-01 20:15
Hello folks. Well, after what ensued here when having attempted to locate a copy of the schematic for my Clairtone 7980, my tech does not want to proceed any further with the repair. Can anyone here recommend a good repair source anywhere in Montreal, Quebec; Basically, the system is barely audible even with the volume knob turned all the way up. Since I'm clueless with the poential repair, any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thanx

have you tried the usual fixes.....deoxit it on all the pots, selector switches etc etc.....that would be a step forward

try searching electronic repair shops in your part of the world ( online ) or use the Yellow pages if you have the Yellow pages up there

In the Montreal area or anywhere in Canada do they want to bother fixing vintage boombox's anymore because they don't carry parts for them. Your only solution would be to look for a "parts" box like i'm looking for and go from there...
or contact ( superduper ) on here and see about shipping the circuit board to him and allow him to replace components upon it ? or replacing the componets yourself, or

Okay, Thanx Folks I have had a few interesting suggestions involving YouTube, gasoline, and a flare.....

Quick update - Major score today! Did manage to pick up not one, but two units for spare; Another Clairtone 7980 with only one button missing as well as a fully disassembled Conion C100 (all of the work already done for me). Looks like I might even finally have a handle on the elusive schematic; From what I was told today, I don't know what the big deal was about this wiring diagram since it was included with the sale of every unit. Karma keeps the equilibrium, always.....

As of 50 pieces or more, you're entitled to start your own museum

RockIt: I have repaired a few of the C100's and almost every time, the amps were toast. Have your tech switch out the HA1392 amp chips and you should be fine. There are 2 of them. Don't ask him to diagnose -- just tell him to do it. And ONLY use OEM chips. No counterfeit china crap (hard to tell) or the NTE equivalents. They won't hold up since Conion did some weird crap in their circuit design and any chip not spec'ing OEM or better will not hold up. Come to think of it, it's overall a very poor amp design anyhow. The manufacturer's datasheet never recommended (in their suggested design anyhow) bridging those amps. Further, Conion used output caps, which I've never seen with bridged amps. Not to say it's not done, but I've never seen it.
