Boombox just broke - Strange!

longboard12 - 2012-02-29 08:30

Hey all,

I'm new here, so thanks in advance for the help.

My roommate was using my old (but awesome) boombox and the thing just crapped out. I haven't had any problems with the radio before, but now it won't increase in volume. Everything still turns on and the radio still plays, but even when its at max volume it's nothing more than a whisper.

Any advice on how to fix this / if its a fatal flaw would be greatly appreciated. The box is great, very sad to see it crash.

Thanks!

make and model number might help

However the common problem given these symptoms is oxidization of the volume pot OR the radio selection switches. Try using Deoxit on both, operate them several times and give it some time to dry out. Then see if the problem persists.

to go like that i would sugest a blown cap somewhere...but as my friend brutus sugests a good clean with detoxit may solve the issue....try this first and then the latter....good luck

Some issues can be checked before assuming the worst. I would check the headphone jack terminal connections by inserting headphones into the jack. See if the volume is good through headphones. You may find that once they're removed that the sound comes back loud and clear through the speakers. Most boxes mute the speakers when headphones are inserted. If the contacts get dirty they can suddenly reduce volume to the speakers. Next try using the unit with batteries or if using batteries plug it in. If the stereo works great with batteries but not while plugged in you could have a bad selector switch and/or power supply. As mentioned before a good cleaning is your last hope before digging deaper. If a cleaning doesn't help you have one more thing to try. If you feel comfortable with taking your box apart look at all the capacitors. If you see any which are bulged at the top or have vented or leaked you can replace those with a basic soldering iron. At this point though it would be advised to take it in for a tech to track the faulty component on the board down.

I hear you beanie. It's hard to diagnose an issue without knowing details. Things like "does it have a tape deck?" If so does it only do it with the radio but work fine with a tape? These are questions that could really help narrow the problem down to a tuner, selector switch, speaker, connection or faulty component.
