I joined this forum looking for info on Walkmans but in the meantime I fell for a lovely 8686 boombox!

It's in fantastic original condition but the VU/tuning LED's on the left hand side are not lighting up when tuning or playing a tape. However, if I plug the iPod into the mic input and play that they do register the levels fine and when FF or REW'ing a tape they flash for a sec when first pressing the button.

 

They double up as fine tuning meters too and never light up with the radio (in record mode or otherwise), if I have mic mixing on and the iPod inputting through the mic pressing record stops the meters.

Can anyone guide me to what may be the likely issue please and how to fix them?
