Wiring an Aux Input?

Ahoy,
I did a search on here but couldnt find much. Does anyone know where I can look to find a step by step absolute dummies guide to adding a 3.5mm socket to my boombox. I want to add an aux input to an old sanyo but dont really know where to start!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You could use this link:

the part where he is getting the signal...could be a start

Hello,
I have construct for you a schematic block diagram on how you can modify to add in an auxilliary input for your boombox. Pls see attachment.
This should be the original state of yr boombox.
----------------------------
Here is the diagram how you should wire your aux input. You may need to install a selector switch in order for you to choose yr input source.

I tried tapping an aux signal (iPhone) into the input of the tape pre-amp but ended up with very over-driven, distorted sound. I tried line-level output and headphone-level output (turned up or down), but never achieved an adequate sound. I also tried tapping into the output side of the pre-amp, but then the sound was waaay too faint.
I'm guessing there is some sort of impedance mismatch but being new to electronics, I have no idea how to measure this with my multi-meter or what components I'd need to add to fix it. Any thoughts?
