Smashing Sharp GF9000!

northerner - 2012-10-04 12:15

Had a spare hour this evening so connected the power cables direct to the battery terminals, disconnected the smashed switch and joined the two wires. Bunged in ten D's and hot-diggity it only bloomin works!!!!!!!!   Radio works, tape plays rewinds fast forwards etc! Only had tweeters connected so no idea how it sounds and I forgot to reconnect the vu meters so haven't tested those bits yet but so far so good!  Started fabricating the missing posts using copper tubing...anyone know of a reason why copper tubing and p38 filler wouldn't work?

radio.raheem - 2012-10-04 12:25

sweeeeeeeeeet.....hey si you wouldn't happen to have a spare tuner window for one of these would you...pretty please

northerner - 2012-10-04 12:32

Got no spare bits, sorry mate, have had to make half of this one as it is!

radio.raheem - 2012-10-04 12:38

no worries bro...if you don't ask you don't get

northerner - 2012-10-04 12:48

Absolutely! if I'd had a spare I'd happily let you have!

stereo.mad - 2012-10-04 13:02

well done si it seems it's all coming together, cant wait to see the end result.

how are you fixing the copper tube to the inside of the case?

samsnite - 2012-10-04 13:02

Wow! Super nice restoration! That brittle plastic is not easy to repair and work with.

northerner - 2012-10-04 13:22

Not sure Lee...could try 2 part epoxy where it touches then fill them or would just jamming it with filler be enough?

northerner - 2012-10-04 13:23

Thanks samsnite!!

stereo.mad - 2012-10-04 14:26

Mmm I think I'd go for something like chemical metal, you would have to make the surface really rough though

northerner - 2012-10-04 15:04

Thanks Lee, had a look at chemical metal and it seems like the same stuff as p38 ie a 2 part polyester adhesive filler?...I think I'll try one screw post with p38 then see how well it bonds

stereo.mad - 2012-10-05 00:11

Been thinking Simon, you can get a fiberglass filler, I think it's called something like p40 it's in a simler tin as p38 and its much much stronger, you can get it anywhere that sells p38, I think p38 is to brittle but the fiberglass filler is very tough and you drill and scew into it and it will hold,I've use it so many times repairing plastic bike panels

northerner - 2012-10-05 00:39

Nice one, thanks Lee. Had a look and it does sound like it'd do a better job than P38 so I've ordered a tub

Yeh probably but I live in the Yorkshire Dales mate where we have no such shops!...locally I can buy outdoor gear and boxes of fudge with pictures of the town on    Its a 30 mile round trip to the nearest Halfords or alike!

stereo.mad - 2012-10-05 02:09

wow, what do you run your boxes on.....do you have electric there????

lav.loo - 2012-10-05 02:18

no they still use oil up that neck of the woods Lee, did Si not tell you that he's converted all he's boxes from electric to oil

northerner - 2012-10-05 02:22

hey you laugh but my heating does have to run on oil!!

andyboombox - 2012-10-05 02:40

my first 9000 had had a speaker refit, marantz speakers i believe, reno will prolly tell you more.....then when i got another 9000 it was running on its original woofers.....and i actually found they sounded much better-i guess its all down to personal taste-but i cant help thinking that lees 9000 looks well mean with the mod and the barred grilles

definitely safer in the house  but not in my shed when I have a thousand litres of oil in a tank right next to it!!...always have to double check I've unplugged my soldering iron as if the shed goes up in flames there'd be one hell of a bang when it takes out the tank!!!!

I'll see if I've got time to test it out again this weekend with the woofers in place and I'll report back.  Gotta test the vu meters anyway...can't believe I forgot to test the most important part!

ha ha yeah them tanks need to isolated from anything electrical for sure, i certainly would'nt want to store any boxes near it lol

northerner - 2012-10-09 12:44

So I've been working on fabricating the six missing screwposts which is a bit of a sod to do to be honest. Trying to cut the tubing to fit as closely as possible and maximising the surface area for the filler to adhere to is a bit fiddly.  Especially when trying to make sure nothing catches on anything else as obviously these replacement posts are quite a bit wider than the original.  This is one of the three I've done so far.

...and here its is glued in place and packed with the weird fibreglass filler stuff. Its really messy as its basically glue with hair in so is a bundle of laughs to deal with! Once hardened obviously I'll file it neat again!  Done 3 so only 3 more to go!

stereo.mad - 2012-10-09 13:27

ha ha forgot to say si,that fibre glass filler is super messy! looking good though

samovar - 2012-10-09 13:29

fascinating. it's like an organic process, i am impressed

northerner - 2012-10-09 14:27

Super messy is an understatement Lee! It was a challenge not to cover myself and the rest of the box with the stuff!

northerner - 2012-10-10 12:50

Thanks again to Lee for the tip about P40 fibreglass filler coz I've just filed down and drilled the three I've done and they are absolutely rock solid and have worked brilliantly!

that's good si glad it worked.....it will be ready to show off soon eh?

northerner - 2012-10-10 13:30

I reckon it'll be ready fairly soon, it's just getting the time to do it...they insist I actually turn up at work if I want paying and the missus always has other things for me to flamin do. Got a load of in laws coming this weekend   I end up having to sneak to my shed for an hour or so here and there!

Listening to Public Enemy at high volume...sounds awesome!

Still got a couple of things to do to it...the power switch is a new one and needs the existing button attaching to it so it stands proud of the casing.  Also got to fabricate some catches for the battery cover as its currently held on with tape!  Haven't swapped the power supply over yet as I wanted to make sure it all works properly before I did.

Thanks to everyone for the encouragement and a special thanks to Chris/Del for the power supply and to Warren/ledmeter for very kindly sending me the last slider all the way from the other side of the world for nothing!

Love this hobby and love this forum!!

samovar - 2012-10-14 11:31

breathtaking job, it looks better than mint!  chapeau, as they say in paris

stereo.mad - 2012-10-14 13:05

bison - 2012-10-14 13:12

great job si!

it looks top notch

lav.loo - 2012-10-14 13:32

i'm with the lads here Si fantastic job well done

stereo.mad - 2012-10-14 13:39

hows it sounding with the standard speaker si?

northerner - 2012-10-14 13:45

It's sounding surprisingly good. Can get some good volume out of them before they crap out a bit. It's no M70 but very decent. I'm very happy to keep them standard. Will do a comparison with some other boxes to see how they rank

northerner - 2012-10-14 13:52

...and thanks for the positive comments guys it means a lot

andyboombox - 2012-10-15 05:27

ive just got to say one thing si.....if anyone could make a box actually look better than it did when it left the factory then its you brogood pics too-i didnt think you worked in photography though lol-great stuff

andyboombox - 2012-10-15 05:28

hey SM,ive had two 9000's-one with relacement speakers and one with originals and the originals sounded way better than the replacements
