hi guys,need some help with my recently aquired jvc pc5.ive just put new speakers in,no problems,dropped a couple of mini kabooms in there and they fit perfectly and sound as good as the originals didso thats not the problem....the problem is this.the tuner module-it appears to be stuck!it will move so far either way and pick up a few stations along the way but soon gets stuck in either direction.im guessing (or hoping lol)the string isnt broken (if something this high tech has a strung tuner),but im guessing more that its just stuck on something inside?are these easy to get into ie is the outer case on the tuner screwed on?any info or help please would be greatly appreciated folks

take the speakers off , then the brackets off either side of the unit . pull out the rca"s that go to the tuner then it will come away ,  remove the tuner cover then you are in if the tuner string was broken it would not move attall might just be gummed up or trapped on something .

thanks si brother-if it turns out to need re stringing ill leave it well alone,and wait till another tuner section becomes available!one will turn up!it picks up a few stations as it is so im happy to leave it for now if the string is buggered-tried re stringing a cheapo thing years ago and ruined it so im not about to ruin this

I had this exact issue with mine a few months back.  If I recall there was an issue with gunk on the string and this was causing the action to be far from smooth.  As per above you should open the tuner up, there isn't much in there so access shouldn't be a problem.  The string has a spring in it so you can remove it easily enough but be sure to scribble a diagram of it's course.  Just clean the wheels with some alcohol, check the wheels (inc the small ones) and maybe clean the string itself with a non-grease-based lube.  Check also that the dial moves smoothly with zero stiction.  Don't forget that a snagged string could prevent the tuning potentiometer (variable capacitor) from operating.

cheers agent orange,going to have a look inside the tuner tonight-only just noticed but theres a small amount of gunk coming out from the tuner wheel on the front of the tuner too so this definately points to the stuck with gunk and crap idea that yourself and chris believe it is....the sooner the better to getting it done as im bored of radio humberside and radio aire lol

cheers azz bro....but ive opened up the tuner now and almost wrecked it....all i can say is i left it well alonethere are tiny bits rattling around in there,but the strings still in place,albeit slightly slack-this is way out of my depth ie tuner strings etc and im not prepared to wreck this thing,ive got a massive love for this box and to wreck the tuner would be game overso ill see how things go-ive managed to get into radio humberside again now anyway so alls not lost

my advice would be to leave it for now and enjoy what is working on it, until you can get it to a qualified tech

you're right to be careful with the tuner string as I've only restrung 2 boxes and I reckon I aged 10 years each time I did it
