Need to clean up this mess, shocked motors actually work fine, in the condition they are in. Parts is going to be be cleaned with acid and corrosion neutralizer and then goes into heated ultrasonic bath for deep cleaning, to get rid of corrosion.
brutus442 - 2012-12-28 10:28
Great work retrodos....keep posting these kinds of posts. I find them amazing!
retrodos - 2012-12-28 10:31
I always label all screws springs and ETC and put in bags, so won't lose parts.
Before how brown rubber is on idler tire for playback.
After cleaning rubber, using rubber rejuvenator, also make sure rubber is rubber and not hard as a rock.
lav.loo - 2012-12-28 10:43
ahh work in progress, ooops my bad Retrodos, looks like you have your work cut out there still.....the end product should be a real pleasure to see, great work Retrodos
brutus442 - 2012-12-28 10:45
retrodos, great work. Could you also take some pics of the solenoid(s) that resets during power up/down. I've never delved into mine deep enough to check these out.
Thanks!

Thanks!
Here the solenoid that moves the head assy into position in playback mode.
Before cleaning solenoid, what a mess, shocked it wasn't frozen.
After removing and curing rust, solenoid will be happy now.

Blimey, that's some serious work going on there.

Starting to look much better after taking everything apart and cleaning and putting back together, sure work much smoother now.
retrodos - 2012-12-28 18:02
Finish giving the tuner a PCB cleaning bath, pretty much all corrosion gone, switches cleaned also and pots and tuning capacitor plastic taken off and cleaned. Looks much better then before hopefully work better to. Will end up changing capacitors once ordered and do a IF alignment.

Fixed plenty of m90's but i wish i had you're skill retrodos....nice work lad
deech - 2012-12-29 07:10
No words for this post
retrodos - 2012-12-29 09:37
Selector switches rebuilted. Now that explain why I had to play with them to get them to work! Doubt it contact cleaning of any amount would have worked.
Before
After ultrasonic cleaning, didn't even have to sand.
deliverance - 2012-12-29 09:59
top draw as usual retrodos your work is a pleasure to watch .
retrodos - 2012-12-29 18:20
Another important part that most overlooked, is to replace themal paste on both amp IC modules, as themal paste over the years breakdown and will cause issues down the road if not changed.
brutus442 - 2012-12-29 18:23
Amazing Retrodos....that ultrasonic cleaner does a hell of a job!
retrodos - 2012-12-29 22:53
Working on changing most of the electrolytic capacitors on the boards, have to order quite a few, so will be a week or so.
retrodos - 2012-12-30 11:18
Last owner must have force the tape out as seen pry mark on the playback head and cam assy is broken. Hate when people make failed repair attempts, then dump it on Ebay. If you don't know how to fix them don't attempt to as you make matters alot worst! Lucky have spare cam assy and, so will be rebuilting it using it instead and will change out record/playback head, also have to replace 4.7 ohms fusable resistor.
retrodos - 2012-12-30 12:45
After deck been rebuilted and parts that was replaced.
Old parts that was replaced, due to was cracked or rusted.
retrodos - 2012-12-30 17:33
Now works on both channel, were as before only one channel worked and tuner is now working on all bands and detecting stereo, line in also works, just have to finish repairing tape deck which needs 4.7 ohm resistors and rest of capacitors. Will be working on cleaning up casing, already cleaned sub frame.
brutus442 - 2012-12-30 17:50
....like a Phoenix from the ashes, she rises....
OUTSTANDING WORK!
retrodos - 2012-12-30 18:12
Tape also works now, Replaced shorted regulator and just put a 9 ohm resistor for the time being, but will put a 4.7 ohm when it come in the mail.
Do have the knobs just didn't put them in as taken back apart for case cleaning.
brutus442 - 2012-12-30 18:18
Is the 4,7 ohm resistor the fusible one on the board behind the deck? If it's that one, it's a common problem for these boxes

OUTSTANDING work Retrodos nearly as good as me and thanks again for trying brother...i guess i'll never get those speakers...as the other pair has also vanished now but i have bought another 12 bander eq same as other for my technics...£80 if that doesn't give me deep enough bass nothing will...as i plan to run them through a loop doubling the low end bass response

Wait long enough you will get them, I see them from time to time, they just when to high, wasn't worth it and the fact that he wasn't even willing to ship them was another cost added to the top of that.

It is toward the top by the ceramic capacitors, if you don't hear the solenoid click, but also could be other issues.

I like you're boombox driptip....had one years ago lad, a bit big though lol congrats bro

Had to also rebuilted the reel motor for rewind and forward, as it had dead spots "was weak". I like to rebuilt the motors instead of trying to find a replacement, as with age all will have dead spots and corrosion on contacts, once rebuilted will last years.
retrodos - 2012-12-31 02:21
JVC RC-M90 Boombox was repaired and just a quick demonstration. Still have some capacitors and cleanup to do but fully functions now and looks much better then it was before.

Awesome job!!!!! Great as hell!!!!!! YEAH!!!!!!
Are you missing a push button next to the fine tuning...? Are you gonna try and get a part from a donor, or are you gonna try and make one?
Keep up the fantastic work!

Excellent work your doing on the boombox. Bringing new life to an iconic boomboxes is so rewarding. I have a knack for fixing electronics myself and it's really cool to learn from guys like yourself. I'm a master electrician by trade and have repaired several different type of electronics and control units, relays etc. I've also installed many auto stereos systems that would knock your socks off. It takes a lot of patience and a good eye to restoring these boxes. So thank you for sharing your knowledge retrodos.
ps. just finished cleaning up the inside of my JVC PC55JW. A complete circuit board clean up and deoxit spray on all the controls. Finally got rid of that annoying static coming from the volume sliders and EQ sliders.

Trying to find one, or wait till have a donor.
Let us know if you come across one... if not, if you want I could make you one to complete it for the time being (until you find an original).
Keep up the great work!
