Cassette problem with Sharp GF-9500

yowsah - 2013-02-11 13:09

Please excuse my ignorance on these matters as I am a newbie. I have been enjoying a Sharp GF-9500 for some time now. However, recently I was unable to get a tape into the machine. The door won't shut as the cassette isn't dropping down far enough. The heads appear to be too 'high up' to allow the cassette into the housing. Can anyone suggest a solution. It may be that I need to find a decent repair shop as it is extremely unlikely that I will be able to sort this problem unless it is simple. Many thanks.

Welcome! We were all clueless when we started that's why this forum is so fab! I'd guess it needs a bit of lubrication or might be stuck due to a bust or stretched belt but you'd do better waiting for a more expert guess than mine

Oh and with a bit of guidance it'll likely be an easy fix as these things are made to be repairable

Many thanks. Let's hope it's an easy fix!

Hello Yowsah,

I'm not a technician also, but as far as I know - problem like this caused by the stretched flywheel belt.
Yes, it's an easy fix, If you change the flywheel drive belt it will solve the problem, but let’s face it - if you clean the whole tape mechanism, lube it and only then install new belts it will work flawlessly another 30 years.

Just found on the net this bulletin for all Sharp authorized service stations.
As you may see they suggest to adjust the tension of the head plate pressure spring.
You decide, but I would recommend start from the belt change.

Welcome to the forums

You're welcome,

I believe you can change the belt by yourself, untill you will find decent repair shop for complete cleaning and lube.

Good luck.

I am a new member this morning, seeing your request I joined to help out . I have a gf9500 bought in 1983. On my unit a similar thing happend - Mech would not go into play position, the MAIN flywheel has a belt which is worn to the point of slipping, I used a cotton bud and some methelated spirit - clean the motor spindle and flywheel/belt - then try it - Don't touch ANY tensioned spring, esspecially the black one pushing the tape-head mech back down...very,very hard to correct if you bend it even a bit....spent hours fixing mine, let us know how it goes.
