get the 480 chris....better sounding than the 490....although the 490 looks better

cheers for that guys ,  i have one at the minute that is fine but on the line in it is a little quiet no humming or anything like that its clear sound i just wondered if thats just the way they are . 

all i can tell you chris is that there made by sanyo as regarding line in try detoxing the switch or turning the volume up on your walkman etc

the line in on some boxes can be frustrating imo,i have fully working boxes cleaned etc but the line in function is terrible,aiwas work best with line in imo

your right andy some sound like farting in a empty dustbin or is that sharps in general 

Can the gain be turned up via a pot or similar?

it could well do jules i will get hold of a service manual then take it from there .
