Pioneer SK-21 repair?
kmulkey - 2013-04-24 15:31
I have a Pioneer SK-21 that I'd like to get repaired. I'm near Chicago in case anyone's close. Tapes will sometimes play for 10-15 seconds, then stop, or slow down. Sometimes the pinch roller doesn't engage but the capstan does turn. Also, the right hub either moves slow or doesn't move at all.
Thanks in advance.

Can you upload a video of your repair to youtube to show-off your talents of repairing boombox's briefly explaining what you did?
Hopefully you have before and after pictures

Well quick explanation. I took back cover off and detached 2 antenna wires and hot and ground wires. Then I took all knobs off and took screws holding tuner/amp board in. Then took screws out holding in deck, speakers and a few other things. I removed everything carefully not to do any damage. I had to blow off all dust and dirt from everything. Took off grills and washed all plastic parts. Clean all switches and pots including record bar. Took deck apart to clean all dust and dirt and remove old grease. Clean heads and all tires. Demagnetize tape head. Clean good belts and replace bad ones. Put back together and hook up power to test deck. Adjust motor speed and azimuth if needed. Put new longer screw in amp board where post was slightly cracked. Put new screw in amp chip holding the heat sink to it. Dry all parts and put everything back together. Test all functions this is just a very simple explanation. It took approximately 8-9 hours and that's only because I had to take back apart to readjust motor speed on deck. Most deck motors face back of unit to easily adjust when back is off. But not pioneer and usually in better built boxes all wires are plugged for easy removal. But not pioneer, they are all soldered anyway her are some before and after pics

Great work by baddbill. Very communicative, very meticulous, it looks and sounds great. I may be needing his services again for another Pioneer...stay tuned!

I have one of these old units too. A (high-school) graduation present (from my departed mother) that has been used and abused over the years - and still works!
I would like to get her spiffed back up....but the chassis has discoloration and some physical damage. Is it even possible to get parts for these units anymore?
Huge sentimental value.

How did you get the amp and tuner boards off? My amp board seems to be stuck, and the tuner board is loose but won't clear the screw post for the exterior rear cover.
