Sharp GF-9292 tape deck in play squeals like a sick R2D2

Hoping somebody on here may have encountered this serious issue. My recently acquired mint 9292 was playing perfectly one minute, but in the dark I accidentally pushed the REC button instead of play, and then pushed it a few more times before realising it was the REC button! DOH!! Now when I press any of the PLAY/REW/FFW buttons only a loud whirring/squealing tone comes out of the system, no more cool retro beats from the cassettes. Radio still works fine, no issues there. Has anybody had this happen to them, anyone know what the cause is or how to fix it? HELP! I wanny fix my baby!! ;(
Cheers all.

Doc! Thanks so much for your prompt and simple solution. I will give it a go : ) In the meantime if you have any photo(s) or a diagram of the 'record bar' that would help me in identifying it then I would be most appreciative.
Again, thanks so much for your reply.
Cheers!

Better break the record tab off the cassette before another accident.

It's been so long since handling a mighty cassette I completely forgot this vital function haha.
