I got an awesome 990 in the post today, I would say 8.5-9 out of 10 cosmetically outside and inside, I knew tape was blown out but I got it for well under $100 which I think was an absolute steal. It sounds amazing too but there is a problem with the left speaker, I'm getting some faint staticky sounds out of it, I gave the balance knob and other dials some contact cleaner from outside & inside although I'm having a bit of a hard time accessing the speaker fully & I don't want to mess around too much with the guts as I'm an amateur at all this.
Does anyone have one that had/has this issue & any tips on what may be the issue? Like I said, I am getting some sound out of it & it has gotten a bit stronger after the contact cleaner but still nothing audible enough to think that alone is going to fix it. It sounds mega
anyway with just the one speaker but if I can fix the other speaker this box would be a real beauty of a beast. If I can't get it to go is there anyone in the u.s. who thinks they may be able to help? I'm
in NJ.
Also, while I'm at it, I just got a decent 9191 that works (all functions work) great but would need new aerials & is probably a 6-7 out of 10 cosmetically, some light scratches on the top plate & front case (back & battery compartment is really clean except for some tiny dots of white paint on the battery cover) & the sliders need some lube as they don't move as smoothly as they should. I got another one that is in better condition so I'm gonna try to focus on that one & would be open to a trade on the one I just described. It really doesn't need any work except the aerials & a nice cleaning inside the sliders but other than that its a great box. let me know if ur interested. I'm interested in sanyo's, aiwa, hitachi, sharp, panasonic,grundig..maybe I can get another box on my list while helping someone capture the 9191 they may have been looking for. Attaching pic of the aiwa & 9191. I hope I or someone can sort the speaker issue cus I have a feeling I will be using this a bunch. Thanks
My 990 had left speaker out. These have a dual dolby chip, one for each channel. The left dobly chip on mine was toast, replaced it and it worked again. If you have no idea what you are doing you can either learn quick and dive in or get a a good techy to look at it for you. Gratz on a great score though.
thanks man, i appreciate it, it really so clean so I think i'll try one way or another to get the speaker going again. can you lead me in the right direction to where that chip is if you remember? is it something that involves soldering? i ask cus i don't have one so i might be best to take it for repair. that's most likely what it is though, thanks again!
My 990 had the same dolby chip problem...until Docs fixed it!
