Sharp GF9000 speaker replacement

northerner - 2013-12-05 07:08

So I've got a new Sharp GF9000 on its way to me (well actually its sitting in my sisters house way down south until we meet up at Christmas ) and I know that one of the woofers has a huge tear in it so I'm gonna replace them both.

I've been browsing the forum and the web for a while trying to find what i reckon would be a good replacement but my lack of knowledge of speaker stuff (I'm no audiophile) is making it tricky and I'm going slightly crosseyed...I know several others have replaced them on the 9000 and wondered what people used (that is available in the UK).

They seem to be 8 inch 3.2ohm so I've been looking for 4 ohm ones but seem to be finding mostly subwoofer ones.  I think someone said on a thread that 8 ohm ones would be fine but they wouldn't be as loud...anyone know how much volume would be lost?...if its not significant then I can widen the search.

Cheers!

I used m90 speakers once si...i wouldn't use 8 ohm in the 9000 as the amp is to weedy....not sure which ones to sugest mate...good luck

andy boombox ended up with that box....he said they sounded better with the origionals....ofcorse he was talking rubbish haha.....bit like my spelling

I put 4 Full range Kenwood car speakers, 2nd hand from ebay in my discolite and was blown away with the improvement in sound. Car speakers are not designed for loud outdoor use but they sound brilliant for the money indoors

if they can make a discolite sound half decent think what they'll do for your gf9000

these days the discolite steals the scene. deech found one a few days ago, and right now she's the subject of 2 posts plus the present hijacked thread...  sorry guys, i vote for the gf-9000

nickfish - 2013-12-05 09:59

So, let's get back on topic....

I also have a shit sounding GF9000 so would be pleased to hear what other people have put in them.

Anyone?

radio.raheem - 2013-12-05 10:23

Do you have a crown 850 Nick.....there shit boxes but the speakers are superb....im gunna try my 970 drivers basially idential to the 850 if they fit

northerner - 2013-12-05 10:27

Lol...saw that there had been a load of posts on my thread and thought great lots of useful tips!...no such luck lol

My other one came with replacement vintage Sharp ones and sounds pretty good actually.

Thanks for the tips smeats but I'd prefer more classic looking speakers.

Just need new easily available ones for this new one...any other ideas?

Anyone?

dig dig hey nicholas .

nickfish - 2013-12-05 10:57

Not a dig at anyone really but i do think they are highly over rated and of all my boxes this one probably disappoints most. Or was it the big Marantz or the Fisher or perhaps.....? Frankly, most boxes that are not Aiwa's can stand some improvement and more Sharp's fail to live up to the hype than anything else. Just my opinion though...

deliverance - 2013-12-05 11:01

good point nick .

northerner - 2013-12-05 11:59

No dig taken...no odds to me whether Nick likes it or not...everyone's entitled to their own opinion...I think its a great box with the best vu meters going, just needs a bit of a speaker upgrade that's all...just need to know what anyone has used or what they recommend...there are plenty of audiophiles on here who may be able to point me in the right direction...cheers fellas

Would these be ok?

deliverance - 2013-12-05 14:44

they can only be better for sure si .

northerner - 2013-12-05 14:57

Well as one of the existing ones is ripped to shreds that wouldn't be hard lol I'll give em a punt.

Got some useful pointers from JCP too so I'm good to go!

I would transplant the old chrome dust caps to the new driver just for aesthetics.

They have a reasonable sensitivity of 93dB so thats a good start. I would be very interested in how well these work out for you Si. What is the power output rating of the GF-9000?

northerner - 2013-12-06 06:21

I'll give these a go then as they're pretty cheap and sound like they'll do. Fella on boomboxery said they'd be ok too. The 9000 is a 45w machine I think

Description says those speakers are mid bass with frequency Range  55 - 8kHz,  but you need FULL RANGE speakers.

northerner - 2013-12-06 09:02

Ok so what frequency range should I be aiming for? :-)

metad - 2013-12-06 10:11

Well, i forgot GF-9000 has proper paper cone tweeters, not piezo ones, so, in this case these mid bass speakers will fit.

northerner - 2013-12-06 10:51

Ok thanks metad

andyboombox - 2014-07-21 07:19

for me si the originals in the 9000 if the machine hasnt been thrashed all its life sound fantastic.but,i know youre awesome skills at modding my brother so im sure the end result will be spot on,whatever speakers you go for-and congrats on scoring another 9000

nickfish - 2014-07-21 08:00

What did Si do with his 9000 then?

What speakers did he choose?

northerner - 2014-07-21 08:00

In the end I found an original woofer to replace the shredded one, so both my 9000's have original speakers and sound great. John had a listen the other day and was pretty impressed. One of my 9000's will be up for sale soon as its a duplicate and I've got a damned holiday to pay for
