Sharp GF-9191 carboot find

mrp32dave - 2009-09-01 16:12

Found a Sharp GF-9191 at a local carboot on Saturday very dirty but looked like it had potential of being very nice, no obvious damage, took it away for £5.00.Got it home switches all needed some serious cleaning cassette deck just chewed up tapes, the rubber drive wheel the capstan had turned to goo, radio worked fine apart from problems caused by the dirty switches.Took it completely apart inside not too bad bad cleaned out what dust there was, removed the cassette deck and replaced the capstan rubber drive wheel with a piece of silicone rubber tube from rc cars spares box, worked great. Then spent the rest of the day cleaning all the switches and totally cleaning it inside and out.It turned out very nice indeed.here's some before and after pictures.

Yeah nice price and cleaned up better than I could of imagined, and I agree it does look nice. Also noticed the red 778 on the inside of the front ties in with the serial number.

Thanks Bendy, a bit of effort cleaning pays off, I go to carboots 1 on Saturday it's huge takes at least 2 hours to look on every stall, and 2 smaller ones on Sunday.I did actually buy 8 boxes over the weekend, but the 9191 was by far the best Smile.
The rest all cost betwwen £1 and £2 except a nice Cobra RX-DT707 for £8.
Here's a list:

Philips D8028 nice red mini
Philips D8132
Philips D8072
Sanyo M-X315L cheap build but looks new
Sanyo M-W200L
Sharp WQ-268E also looks new
Samsung ST-123LH white mini

I might post some pictures tomorrow.

by the by what's the samsung look like?

mrp32dave - 2009-09-02 11:06

Thanks it turned out real nice, the Samsung is a cheap modern squegg probably mid 90's, I just liked it and not seen a Samsung before it cost £1.I'll do a new post with pictures of the list. Also picked up Grundig Satellit 2100 for £3 a bit rough but fully working!

Aahh, the old Sharp drive rubber problem, I had the same on my 9696 and silicone tube fixed it up a treat, and wasn't THAT bad to do either.

That 9191 is really really nice, I've got one myself and they've got good performance too to match the looks.

Congrats Cool

super clean up mate.......looks fab now......

i had the same problem with the idler spindle rubber on a gf-555....i used some 4mm twin and earth cable sheath...just strip out the copper and it works a treat.....

outstanding cleaning dave

ghetto.blaster - 2009-09-03 18:40

how did you clean it so good? Confused

mrp32dave - 2009-09-04 16:25

Well I did spend a whole day cleaning it, I use baby wipes and mild detergent lots of cotton buds and soft brushes and finish it of with wax polish and micro fibre cloths.I was lucky in that underneath all the grime it was in very nice condition.

Very detailed tune up of that box.
I have quite a few that could use your
steady hand and patience.
Great job though!

ghetto.blaster - 2009-09-05 13:42

wow GOOD job thanks

retro.addict - 2009-09-12 08:30

WOW, amazing! It reminds me of when I used to find my boxes as dirty as that, and cleaning them up like the way you have. Beautiful! I hope to find a 9191 someday, though I would like a 9292 also!
