My new Aiwa. Almost dead at the moment but i will fix it
.
Sweet, nice one, like the looks.
Yep. The one that got me started with boxes 1979. Still my fave.
i like the look of this box too, i think i need an aiwa in my lot
congrats MUTO
Thanks, Aiwa sounds fantastic(even with one channel). Can't wait tomorrow. I will open it and start troubleshooting.

Muto, apart from the crappy impossible to fix deck design, that is one of my much liked boxes, they look awsom, and sound really nice too..perfect look and perfect size...
It's not easy to fix, but not nearly impossible. I fixed mine.

Norm i made the mistake of unscrewing the gearbox from the bottom, and had no service manual,i ended up taking the gearbox off to replace the 2 small belts, and it went all downhill from there,it never worked right again, hey norm, have you noticed when you take the gearbox off,its just a manual piano key type cassette deck, not logic..

Like Ghetto says, perfect look and size! Congrats, Muto, very Fintelligent find!
Yep. Once you take the gearbox off, you are in no-man`s land. You have to be a real pro to do this. I have seen it done, on some of those japanese sites.

Paul -- I thought I sent you a Service Manual? Anyhow, I did not disassemble the gearbox. At least I don't think I did -- been a long time, can't remember. Unless something is broke in there, that isn't something I would recommend disassembling. On ANY cassette deck, I would not recommend breaking it down any further than necessary to effect the belt change. In fact, if you don't believe me, try breaking down the cassette deck on any deck, even a simple one, and once you get too far, it's almost impossible to get back together again. So, I'm gonna say, tread carefully unless you know what you are doing. This is one boombox that you don't want to do blind. And I agree -- the mistake was trying to disassemble that box -- don't do that. Parts are no longer availabe to service that gearbox anyhow so if something in it is broke, you aren't gonna get any parts no how so leave it alone.
hi Stormin Normin, do you still have the service manual? Schematics would be helpful when i start to repair the dead right channel.
Cool man! Mine has exactly the same problem, one channel is dead (cant remember which one...) and the deck is busted, i payed 10 euros for mine.
Hey Muto. Check with ghettoman for the SM. My computer crashed quite some time back and I lost a lot of files. The SM was sent to him before that.
I have had my 990 going today. I obviously did something wrong, as, the cassette function lights aren`t working. Otherwise, it`s spot on. Not bad, for a 30 year old machine.
Fixed the dead channel! Now need to fix some other issues. I think i will leave the tape alone and use line in and radio.
Samsnite: check the dolby ic, maybe you have same problem with your Aiwa.
Yes, the dolby ic...
seriously, my knowledge in electronics are minimal
But thanks for the tip tho
aiwa, what an amazing machine.

Great boombox first time on this site
I know this is a old topic, but I have to say:
I found one with very issues, like radio and tape deck not work and stop eject button locked and DUST EVERYWHERE!!!
Only Line in is working on my Aiwa.
With some difficulty, I got disassemble the internal chassis and make a good clean up (no dust anymore) and solve the stop eject button problem.
All I can say is WHAT A SOUND!!!!!!
For that size, is almost unbelievable!!!!
Cheers.
