Hello!

As some of you maybe know i posted about this "unkown" Philips a while ago. Well, it turns out i bought it. kind of "pig-in-the-sack", since i didnt really know any specs on it, the auction didnt even say if it worked or not.

However, i won the auction relatively cheap. (It turns out it was worth all the money in the end.)

As i get it home the first thing that comes to my mind was "Oh my, this is horribly packed". Anyway, I was horrified by this plasticy looking square thingys when i opened the package. Speakers hardly weighing a thing, awfully plasticy . I fired her up and to my delight everything functioned, even the cassette player! I was really astonished by the sound out of this beast. I tested it with some of my tunes straight in the phono line in from my Mp3. And man, this box really can thump.

After brushing of the dirts with my handy toothbrush for an hour or two i took some pictures of it.


I've noticed the charm with this one. Like the 3D series hitachis they really look good after you've spent some time looking at it.





And yes. That is seven speakers.

I love unique and rare boxes.Your D8554 certainly appears to be both.I'm interested to know what amount of input watts is listed on the back.Also,I would assume that front mounted woofer might interfere with stereo separation with its speakers attached.The D8300 and 8443 are handicapped in this way as they are 1-piece designs.The D8554 looks much more logically designed.It would be interesting to open up the speakers to see if all the drivers are real working ones.Is the center section overly heavy suggesting a woofer having a large magnet?Also,is it a very loud box in much the same way as a 8443 and 8300?I'd love to hear your new Philips!

Hm. I'm sad to say there's no specs on the backside (the sticker is missing), only battery lifetime diagrams, some warnings, ETC.

Working drivers? Meaning exactly what?

I can confirm that all the drivers are wired up, it's not a passive system. The overall sound is pretty good on these - like an idiot I gave mine away because I wanted to concentrate on 1 box boxes - DOH!

This is an interesting boombox. I like it's unusual layout. Congrats on the pickup, Asdexander.
The big centre woofer will only handle low frequencies, so it won't upset stereo separation. You could check this by operating it with the detatchable speakers unplugged.
hey, with the speakers off it would look like a kick a$$ mono...

The closest I have is the 3D9, which is a 3pc 3D with the superwoofer(s) in the main unit.

The version of this boombox with a CD player in place of the big woofer (the D8854) was used in the Bond movie The Living Daylights in the famous ghetto blaster scene

Great find, I've never seen that model before. That box definately qualifies as a show piece.
