The Hitachi 8190

A couple of quick pics, not brilliant but they'll do for now.

Well, it's not quite mint, but close, the only issue is typically the tape doesnt spin which is just the belt which had got twisted all around the motor pulley and is now too stretched to stay put. (*Sold as fully working on Ebay!!)
Tried the radio and line-in and all works a treat.
Sound through line-in was clear, punchy, not that bassy but with loudness on not too bad.
'Loses it's way' when the volume goes above about half and gets a bit messy but it's still loud enough and packs quite a punch with the right source material.
Plus, those LEDS really are supercool.
In short, a great box that I'd recommend without hesitation

Congrats on the Hitachi, I remember drooling over that model at the local Best Products sometime around 1980.

Hey Sinister, going through the Best Products catalog was like an electronics orgasm for me back then. I would wear out that catalog flipping pages practically every day for a year until the next catalog came out.

I have a similar 8290, and it sounds just as you described! Minus one point... If I connect anything to the line-in on mine, it sounds horrid. I can't work out why.

You must use din > phono NOT the rca's which are for turntable only on this unit.

DIN worked a treat and it's got a proper line-in selection switch so none of this pressing play nonsense.

I've tried using the DIN but got no sound at all. And yes, I tried flicking the switch on the back between phono and line-in, still nothing. I don't know what's wrong with it.

Sounds like a fault for sure.
Might be a dodgy switch/solder joint come adrift, or a failed IC or other component somewhere.
