I happened to be passing by the second closest Goodwill store to my house today.I decided to stop in and take a look.Happily,I found a Panasonic RX-CW43 waiting for me
.I'm figuring it to be from the very late '80s as it has a "CD/Line In" feature.The box obviously went through the normal life cycle of a blaster .Proof of this was the paint spotting which was difficult to remove.It seems most boomers end up as painters radios before they are donated.
Of particular interest to me was the "Touch n' Tune" FM(only) preset feature.Depress one of the front 3 preset buttons and the boxes analog tuning dial is disengaged.Corresponding to each of these 3 buttons are 3 like numbered pins on the units rear.Rotating the pin for the selected preset button actually tunes through the complete FM band.Just stop on a station of your choice and the numbered preset button on the front is tuned to that station also.When turning any of the 3 pins,the you rely on your ears as there is no marker showing you what stations you find.If any preset button happens to be engaged,simply press the "Manual" button on the front to revert to normal tuning mode.This disengages any preset button and engages the normal tuning dial so it will move the marker in the tuning window.This is all done totally by mechanical means.It's very intuitive so unlike many of the software menus of today (Lasonic i931 anybody
)
It's a mid level box with approx. 3.5 inch cones and piezo tweets.The five band EQ is pretty effective in the mid and treble ranges.However the bass sliders are less effective for the small drivers in their non-ported enclosures.The cones will visibly move but bass output is merely adequate.It will go fairly loud and is a really nice box especially for rock!
Nice score! Every once in awhile there are some good finds at the Goddwills around here too!

Those are unique and nice sounding boxes. Worthy for any collection.
