I like very much the sleek look of these big AIWAs. This one just arrived from the UK :



The good things : the case is dirty but almost mint, the sound is great, radio reception is excellent.
The bad things : Both antennas to replace, and the cassette doesn't work.
As expected, all belts have disintegrated, except the main one (a total of five!!).



This machine looks as if it had a "logic" keyboard, but it hasn't. It's totally mechanical, with motor-assisted functions. Each function (Play, Stop, Forward, etc.) has a cam and a pushrod. A servomotor starts when you press a key and stops when the function is running. Amazing but this is just an overkill ! As the belts are missing, the cassette works only when the function are activated manually. I think everything will be back in order when I have changed them. Has anybody experience with overhauling this mechanism ?

i have one that has all belts replaced but the servomotor has no power everything else works fine had to put it to the side as i have other radios that i am working on,,not a bad box and yes i guess the servomotor was overkill but in that time i do not think people really cared about that because it sounds awesome and the looks

I loved mine even tough it only worked on radio.
The sound is just superb and right for indoor-use.

The 990 is a nice unit for sure. The cassette deck is very "Rube Goldberg" Rube Goldberg explaination (IMHO).
