Bought into the hype(Kaboom)

master.z - 2009-04-11 08:06

All these threads about deep bass, Kabooms and Panasonics, had me wondering if any of my boxes could hang. Well I now see what all hype is about.
On Friday I went to a flea market and proceeded to an old dudes table who always sells old electronics. I always bug him to see if he can score boxes but he has never come through,Until now.
He had a pretty clean RV-NB1 kaboom and was asking $65 but got him down to $40. I tested it out there and everything worked and it came with the strap and remote. I left that place with a huge sh!t eating grin, with Kaboom in tote. Big Grin
I was able to use it last night for entertainmentat a party that just sort of happened. And was asked several times to bring it to an outdoor birthday party thats going down today. Weathers nice so some BBQ, Brews and boxes(tubes) will be a nice distraction for the weekend.
Here are some pics, Enjoy!
Paul Z.

Does any one know if there is supposed to be a remote holder? That would have been nice.

jlf - 2009-04-11 08:24

Ok man, I am in the same boat you were in!

I have heard nothing but hypebeasts yakin in my ear about how great these things are! Laugh Out Loud

THIS testimony is the one that sways my opinion. Because you had the same opinion, view, questions I have.

So... thanks! Now I have to find me one!

old.school.scott - 2009-04-11 08:35

I already know they sound good....but it's a TUBE!
Question is, does anything in your collection equal it's sound?

[nice find though, I'm coming around. not there yet]

old.school.scott - 2009-04-11 09:00

On the other hand, some times I say to myself,"Scott, why so retro?'
If I went back in time to '83, and slammed one of these Kaboom kabobs down on the desk in homeroom class, surely all the B-boys would have pee'd their pants.

master.z - 2009-04-11 10:02

I haven't had a showdown with any of my other boxes yet, but I think a few of my boxes can go louder but nothing like the bass the kaboom is packing. I wish you could taylor the sound a little more, but the presets work well.
I really like it and it's build, it's rugged as hell and looks like a tuff mutha. I have wanted one since they came out, but it was always priced too steep. I basically stole this one. I really can't complain about not finding anything in the wild, Just the last few months have netted some nice ones. So, I'm a happy SOB. Come on m90 or Conion! Big Grin
Peace,
Paul Z.

nice pick-up Z --
lately -that particular model has gone $$ wild on ebay --like 10 times what you paid !!

but at any price -- its an awesome bass pumper Smile

the remote holder was/is a cloth bag thats on the carry strap --
but in your own special case --its your right front pocket Big Grin

let us know how your comparos go

billpc55 - 2009-04-11 13:37

the kaboom is a pretty old design at this point in time. it appears they are no longer being made. kinda sad,but they had the best run of all the boomboxes. i mean didnt that model run for a bout a decade with very little change to it.

you got a bargain on yours.
have fun with it.
its the only model i have two of. it is also the only model in my collection i bought brand new.
one came from a dumpster a week after i bought a brand new one.
i liked them so much i didnt bother returning the one i bought.

geoffhartwell - 2009-04-11 14:13

great sounding boombox imho, i bought my daughter one of these last exmas, brand new sealed in box from electrial store (hughes) in uk. they had a few in stock, only £175 and i cant understand why ive seen some go on ebay for around £300 mark

skippy1969 - 2009-04-11 15:36

Nice deal MasterZ! I know I love my Kaboom for sure. Big Grin

panabox - 2009-04-11 16:03

Nice find! I went to flea markets and pawn shops looking for one to buy. Lo and behold, I came across a booth at the flea market were there was a kaboom playing. I asked if he would be willing to sell it. He said yea $500 scarasticly. He did let me listen to it. And as expected it did have mucho bass. I want to find one to buy , take home, and play my dt680 with it side by side. Cause the dt680 is no joke either. Anybody want to sell or trade their kaboom?

johnnygto - 2009-04-11 17:56

Now I too want a Kaboom, but will not pay 300-400 for one Smile Well.... not today anyways Wink

Thanks for the review Masterz!

The Kaboom has amazing/powerful bass, but not enough highs and it's ugly Laugh Out Loud...all in all it's a good box tho Big Grin

billpc55 - 2009-04-11 18:39

chicks seem to like the looks of these.
i think there is something freudian in that, but i wouldnt know.
honestly tho if you want to make a room full of people shake there butts at a party this boombox is pretty good for doing that.

viennasound - 2009-04-13 23:02

Congrats to this great unit.
Big bass for a low price. Smile
The holder of my remote is in a textil case at the carry strap.
You can see it at the 5.pic here. Wink

Does your kaboom eat MP3?
There are so many different models of it. Roll Eyes

master.z - 2009-04-14 07:03

Hey Vienna, Yes this model (RV-NB1) eats MP3's and ****s out thunder!
One thing I did notice is the aux input level is set a little low. Compared to CD or tape when you max out the vol at 50 it is not nearly as loud.
I had my phone/MP3 player hooked up to it at 75% volume Like I do with most of my other boxes and @ 50 it was loud but not earth shatering or ear bleading loud. I bumped the phone volume to 100% and it was still unimpressive.
So I plugged it into the guitar amp jack which has an adjustable gain knob and only then did it really crank, but still not as loud as the CD or tape players. It's ok though because it still drops bass at any volume, better than most of the boxes I have.
Peace,
Paul Z.

PS. Any one have a remote case they dont want?

isolator42 - 2009-04-14 08:05

40 dollars & fully working with the remote?
You've done well there.

Esp. as Kabooms seem to have just been discontinued by JVC & are occasionally fetching silly prices on eBay already.
Still, I'd kepp it if I were you. they're ace.

master.z - 2009-04-14 13:24

I saw 2 Kabooms in the Detroit craiglist one for $130 (RV-NB1) and the other $50 (RV-NB10?wireless mp3 version) with a busted cassette door.
This one is staying with me.
Big Grin

and it's ugly

I have to agree with Gordie on that. But, in all honesty, I've never heard one, nor seen one in person. I know I'm being stubborn about jumping in on getting one of these. In looking at Paul's close up pics, it appears that larger woofers could fit into the front speaker wells. Are those speakers on the sides of vents? I'm sure this pimped out bass tube would impress me just like it everyone else was. Congratulations Paul. Great price too.

what other boxes do you have?

billpc55 - 2009-04-14 20:00

the dt680 and the kaboom sound really different from eachother. i am sorry to say the kaboom owns the dt680 in terms of bass output.
that being said the bass that comes out of the panasonic bi amped box is very nice well balanced beefy and loud.
that was the reason back when they were introduced i bought it over the kaboom that i demoed in a@b sound that day.
the dt680 was the most expensive boombox i ever purchased after all was said and done i walked out of the shop almost five hundred dollars poorer. i could not afford the dt707 which was the one of the three i really wanted but was very happy with the purchase for the two months i had the dt680.
we were broken into and the nice expensive panasonic was taken.
even tho i come across the ultra nice dt680 second hand very often i never have bothered getting another one.
i can say with absolutely no question the kabooms bass is deeper fuller and louder than the dt680.
the dt680 tho without question sounds more balanced and better defined.

master.z - 2009-04-14 20:10

I have a small collection. I tend to go for the ones on my list and not just whatever I find.
So including the Kaboom, I have the following:
JVC PC-11
JVC RC-838
JVC RC-656
Sharp GF-575
Sharp HK-9000
Magnavox D8443
Lasonic TRC-931
Prosonic PRQ-9962
Rising 2015
Panasonic RX-F3
Panasonic RX-5050
Panasonic RX-5085

viennasound - 2009-04-14 23:01

Thanks for this. I know everyone on here has been saying pretty much the same thing, I guess I just refused to believe it until I had one side by side and could test it out for myself. When I did demo the kaboom years ago, it was at the store so the true comparison between that and my dt680 could not be performed. At that time I had concluded that the Kaboom did produce midbas cleaner and more directly than my dt680 while the dt680 was better with the high bass and more sensitive to the subtle bass passages. But hey, I'll definately take your word for it. I'm in the process of looking for one, cause I'm all about bass from a box. I was just really rootin for the dt680 all the way. Thanks again!!
