Boxes, that is!
I don't own a gun... yet.
I'll start off with the box that my older brother gave me back in 1988 to replace the one my mom got me in late '86/early '87, which was also the same style
Lasonic TRC-931:
^ You can see the battle scars that come from bein' in the streets day in and day out: scratched-up chrome and broken (but never fully broken off) woofer bars. On top of that, the tuner and cassette decks don't work, I blew one of the tweeters in recent years... It's a good iPod dock as is.
Speakin' of iPod docks, the
Lasonic i931...
^ I like this box despite the fact that it's cheaply made and its functions are a ***** to operate. Still, it sounds good, gets loud and gets the job done overall.
From the old school to the new school,... the
Lasonic TRC-931 and
Lasonic i931 ^ 6-feet off the ground.
^ Passing the torch.
^ Standin' side by side.
Before getting the the TRC-931, I originally wanted a
Lasonic TRC-920 (they were taken off the shelves when the TRC-931 hit the scene)...
^ Now, I finally have one!
^ If you pay close attention, you'll notice that there are no orange tweeters. I blew 'em out a few months ago and recently added the MB QUART 1" tweeters I had in my old car stereo system. They sound better than the originals.
The tape deck works half-assed.
Next up, the
Crown CSC-950F:
^ I love the look of this radio - and even tho the cassette deck works half-assed, I'd love it more if the line-in worked the way it should.
I should save my best overall sounding box for last, but it's already been seen and talked about... The
Toshiba BomBeat RT-S93 :
Here's a few group shots of the previous 3:
^ On the ground.
^ On the wall together...
^ and separate.
And now, the twins in my collection of 10, the
Trident CX-473F...
and the
Prosonic PQR-9850:
^ On both boxes, the cassette decks don't work, but when used as an iPod dock, they sound great!
Still, the tweeters tend to sound too bright and distort in comparison to the Toshiba.
Next up, the
General Sound GS-1018:
^ Great lookin' box with good bass and MB QUART 3/4" tweeter modifications... Sounds better than it did ('cause the box didn't come with real tweeters), but still doesn't sound as good as I hoped it would. Oh, well... you can't win 'em all.
Finally, the
Sony CFS-66:
^ This box is solidly built but has some issues 'cause you have to tap around the box to get both channels working at level volume. The tape deck worked good till a week ago but I'm not really sweatin' it. As an iPod dock, the volume is lower in comparison to the radio - which gets pretty loud! I think with better drivers, this box could be a sleeper even tho it only has a "tone" control.
That was 9 out of 10, but my 10th box, a Lasonic TRC-922, is sittin' in a corner disassembled and gutted somewhat. Bein' as tho only 1 channel worked and it sounded like crap (I can't imagine the sound gettin' better with both channels working), I took the woofers out and put 'em in the 920. I also switched the handle with the 920 'cause the chrome was in much better shape. I might put the original woofers back in and assemble it again. At the very least, the box can
look good.
Just when I had put all of my boxes back in the house, I decided to bring 'em back out and let 'em chill on the front steps for awhile.
Oh...
my...
God!
Those are some clean, shiny, sexy boomboxes.
That General Sound GS-1018 is calling my name. If you EVER decide to sell it, I have first dibs.
Actually, you have second dibs...
redbenjoe put his bid in first.
The GS... That box is extremely photogenic! And when the sun hits it...!
My 3rd favorite box to look at.
Thanks.

Your O.G. Lasonic 931 is the 1 variation I have yet to get. That I know of anyway.
I love the colors used on that one on top.... Its quite a bit different looking than the usual 931's you see available.

I like The pics of the First and last generation Lasonics together.
They shoud have styled the I-931 after the original Squared off look.
Nice collection and thanks for sharing!!!

I think it's the least outrageous and most understated version of the 931. If you find a good one, get it 'cause they don't show up as often as the other versions.
Thanks.

I think everybody agrees with you when it comes to the i931. I'm one of the few people who actually likes the rounded styling
, but not more than the squared.
Thanks.

Man, the competition is fierce!!!
What do you mean not real tweeters? If it's a small speaker it's a tweeter in my book.

Really enjoyed those pictures, thanks! I've always loved those Crown 950's just the 'right' look for a classic box in my opinion. The whole collection is immense though and as already stated by others, the photography is spot on.

I spotted some things, after it was all said and done, that I didn't see when I was taking the pics... like dust on my Trident and that gum spot on the ground (how could I possibly miss that?
) among other things. I'm a perfectionist for the most part and little things like that get to me. On a whole, the pics came out pretty good tho. You are right - it was worth it!
Glad you liked 'em,
r o y a l ®!

I knew I had to get a 920 after seeing yours!
Yeah, it's fully working but I think the belts have to be replaced 'cause it'll rewind or fast-forward some tapes and others - it won't. Also, it'll play some tapes fine at certain parts and then the sound'll go up and down like it wants to eat the tape but never does...
Thanks,
driptip.

I didn't treat her with the respect she deserved over the past 20 years, but she's still with me!
Thanks,
henrytai.
BTW, if that Toshiba in your avatar is in great working shape and you ever decide to sell it...
Awesome boxes MONOLITHIC!!
The i931 isn't a patch on the original 931. That's one nice TRC-931 by the way!
The 920 is gorgeous!
I'm lovin' the Crown CSC-950, a perfect looking box!!
The General Sound is amazing too!!
Awesome boxes, all in minty condition, and some awesome photos! Thanks for sharing!

Well that surprises me, because I've got a GS-1016S, which is one step "below" yours, and it's got real tweeters that do indeed produce sound. Maybe someone was asleep on the assembly line when they put yours together.
Here is a pic of mine:
Great lookin' box you got there!
Maybe because of the model number being lower, but I wouldn't consider your box a step "below" tho... It has actual tweeters, so that makes it a step "above", in my opinion.
I still like the looks of mine more tho!
Looks like yours has a mic input, mine doesn't.
