what is the best box out there?

ghettoblasterj - 2008-08-13 18:26

can you give some name of boxes that are the best to find. what do you all look for when you buy a boombox? thanks.

oldskool69 - 2008-08-13 18:33

I think the real question is what do "you" think of when you picture a boombox, its sound, and looks.

And what are you willing to spend?

You'll hear anything from the JVC M-90 to a Vinix as far as what is the best box. It's really just a matter of taste.

I have component sets as well as minis and one piece units. Smile

As far as favorites (I have most of these.):

Component: Sansui CP-7, Pioneer CK-5F, JVC PC-55, Telefunken Hifi Studio 1/1M, Sanyo C9, Toshiba WX-1, Panasonic RX-C100/C300/RX-DT680, Sony FH-5

One Piece: JVC RC-M90, Conion C-100F, G.E. 5239-A "Blockbuster", Panasonic RX-5350 & 7700, Philips D8634 MkII

Mini: Sansui FX-700R, Panasonic RX-C50, Sony ZX-7, JVC PC-100

And welcome aboard!

I Agree

When you buy one it is very important that FM must work 100 %.
Tapes mostly have issues caused by its belts and rollers.
If the speakers ( only the woofers ) have foam surrounds then they are allways rotten and you need new ones or a refoaming job. But these kind of spekers are rare: par example the AIWA CS 880 have these foam surrounds.

peter griffin hit the nail on the head. In my opinion its all about taste look around on ebay or youtube you will eventually find some boxes that you will just love search for to find your favorites.

1) sound quality
2) looks
3) how nice the switches feel to operate

(in that order)

I Agree That is probably the easiest (and best) way to answer this question. On the other hand...in my case, I stared at a lot of boomboxes as a kid, and dream of owning...so now, I have a house/basement/garage full of 'em, with little space to shoe-horn any more in! Big Grin Laugh Out Loud

I was lucky to buy them, use them and then sell them what an ass I was then. Mad

Not anymore!

To me the M-90, Toshiba WX-1, Panasonic RX-DT 680, National RX-C100 and never owned one but the Telefunken Studio 1 and M1 are great sounding boomboxes.

cman750 - 2008-12-17 09:27

Hands Down The JVC RC M90 ....

viennasound - 2008-12-17 09:39

If you are fixed to a label or model, it´s a problem. Most difficoult to find, special when it is a "grail".

When you are open to all (like me Wink ) you may find some nice boxes for cheap.
Some of them are high quality too.

My looking points:

> It must be good looking (in my eyes).
> It must be complete
> FM must work!
> No essential part missing or damaged
> When tape works it´s a bonus
> Good shape (no big scratches or cuts at it)
> Good sound
> Good price
....
can be continued endless Roll Eyes

Point 3,5,7 is difficoult to check at fleas.

I agree too.... the JVC PC-5 was what got me into all this in the first place. And I never had one until this year...

1) Bass. Most have WARM bass, ideally like a tube amp. Highs are also important.
2) Design & control layout
3) Line-in
4) Output power (at least 3W per channel)
5) Separate bass and treble control.
6) Good tape deck, mechanical type.
7) Good FM turner, large scale and good station locking.

This is literally for you to decide. Spend some time looking around the site. Buy some. Sell some. Form your own opinions, and feel free to share them.

There is a wealth of information here to look at, so as my father used to tell me:

Look with your eyes instead of your mouth (or in this case, keyboard) Smile

Good luck, and welcome to the site.
