An crazy looking PHILIPS 170 mono.
No pause function.
No eject, the door must be opened by hand. Big Grin
Big tuning wheel.
But it was my first love. Roll Eyes
And one day i found it at the flea:

So i´m glad, when the D8234 comes in good hands. This box is real nice. Nod Yes

Its back home again Big Grin.

Thank You ViennaSound for this perfect deal and the fantastic packing you did.

So here is the Philips D8234 from ViennaSound playing a tape recorded in 1984 on that same model.

It sounds fantastic, it works perfect and the quality of the tape after 100 times of being played on severel different decks and radios is a proof for "Made in Austria" Nod Yes.

excellent - some others who are into the early 80s Philips boomboxes.
Good to see no less than three 1984 Philips boxes. The biggest one - the D8438 was great sounding. A friend of mine had one & I remember hearing Shannon's "Let The Music Play" blasting out of it, clear as a bell, as we walked around the suburbs of south-west London.
...happy days Smile

Your first boombox is always special, however small it is, right?
My first was also a Philips mono from the same range as your 170 - it had a similar tape transport, it's model number was AR073.
If anyone sees one I'll pay stupid money for one...

viennasound - 2008-12-13 14:38

Hey Börny, i´m glad to see it in good hands.
For me it was only a littlebit strange, but perfect sounding box. For you it´s a personal grail. So we did it right. Wink
I wish you many happy hours with it and show us some more pics with it´s new "friends". Big Grin

@isolator: At viennas fleas are many PHILIPS monos around. Can you show me a pic of that you are searching for? The number say nothing to me that moment... Roll Eyes

isolator42 - 2008-12-15 03:35

Sure:

Also the AR070 (same but with on FM & AM radio bands) would do fine.
Please find one for me & get richer yourself! Smile

This one too has no eject - you pull the door open at the top right. The pause key on the front was horrible to operate too.
But it was my first ever boombox & I loved it. Sound was full & rich with an extension speaker plugged in - it has 3watt output.
Decades ago I sold it to a girlfriend's parents as a kitchen radio for £5...

Bugger!
Searching from eBay.co.uk didn't find it, but if I log into eBay.at it does.
That's a lesson well learned by me...

Hey,
Many thanks for keeping an eye out for me Smile

I love this site... for the NON obvious reasons too!

I learn something new each and every day here!

I love these Philips mono boxes! They are so quirky, yet cool all at the same time!

That '170' font is about as 80's as the movie TRON. Big Grin
