Commencing restoration Black is beautiful?

transamguy1977 - 2009-01-29 17:32

Well taking it apart was a breeze.
As jvc floyd has mentioned very easy to work on.
Taking it apart it is quite like the Rising SRC 2015.
The components and functions are laid out almost identically.
Tonight I got the speakers cleaned and all of the chrome trim cleaned and polished.
The chrome came out as good as I hoped.
I am going to try and wash the back as good as I can because it isn't scratched at all , just a few tiny paint specs.
The front will definitely get painted as well as the speaker grilles.
I also prepped the grilles and popped a few little dents out of them.
Man this box was filthy !!!
If any one can give me some Ideas on how to lessen the cigarette smoke smell please let me know.
Also if anyone has a spare tuner knob let me know mine is kind of scratched and if I can find a good replacement I wont have to touch it up.

baddboybill - 2009-01-29 18:02

looking good so far Smile

jvc.floyd - 2009-01-29 18:03

ford93 - 2009-01-30 06:55

Look at those woofers yum yum!

Can't wait for the results. Nod Yes

borny - 2009-01-30 07:32

That´s what i call "a job for a cleaner Big Grin".

Look´s good .

viennasound - 2009-01-30 08:57

The chrome is looking great!
Good luck for a perfect restauration! Razz

2steppa - 2009-01-30 15:11

Awesome stuff.

That's gonna be sweeeet!

I love sticking the panels in the bath, and drying them off and seeing the difference.

transamguy1977 - 2009-01-30 16:03

Got the guts out of the back tonight and gave it a good bath with febreeze mr clean. the water turned into brown tar by the time i was done. the strap was even scrubbed because it reeks of smoke.
Now just the speakers and circuit boards stink.
The speakers will be dyed so they wont smell when they are done but how do I get the stank off the boards without damaging anything??? any ideas welcome.
Also tonight I masked the front case and got it ready for prep. There is a cold front rolling in tonight so paint will have to hold up the project for a few nights unless it gets warm enough during the day this weekend.

transamguy1977 - 2009-01-30 16:06

Also contemplating painting it a different color what do you guys think???
Gold , Black , or keep it silver???

redbenjoe - 2009-01-30 17:05

the original silver is so nice.

but - someday, if/when you get an old beater 850 -
then its time to apply your experimental color creativities Smile
imho

OR --take a good look at floyds --it was mine - now its his --and its the european version --
its alot darker than yours --
but it looks even more interesting

oldskool69 - 2009-01-30 17:35

Looks tasty T/A! If you want to get the funk off the circuit boards take a very soft toothbrush or small paint brush and gently clean with alcohol. Take your time (did I really need to add that? Laugh Out Loud) and be generous with the alcohol as it will dry fast. Keep the components rights side up. Make sure to be careful to not get any in the pots or adjustable resistors. Let dry a day and they should be poppin fresh! Smile

transamguy1977 - 2009-01-30 17:59

Thanks Freddie I will try the alcohol.
So, just clean the top side of the boards??
hopefully that will get rid of the stank smell.
the boards arent sticky or anything they just stanky Laugh Out Loud

oldskool69 - 2009-01-30 18:02

You can clean the backside as well. I was just thinking about the components on the front side when laying the board on a flat surface. If you hold it vertically you may get alcohol in over the edge of the components.Big Grin

gluecifer - 2009-01-30 18:03

Always love your work TAGuy, great to see some quality of life breathed back into this classic.

Good luck!

Rock On.

I think black on that box would be awesome looking ,especially with all the chrome and aluminum .

reli - 2009-01-30 20:05

Was it missing the tuning knob?

transamguy1977 - 2009-01-31 06:46

No I have the tuning knob but I would definitely like to find a better one otherwise I will just have to touch oup a few spots on mine where its missing the chrome.

Ok how bout this Black faced white woofered Crown ????

Lasonic woofer(super white)replacements? That would look brilliant with the black front. You always have great resto pics Frank. Great work amigo.

jlf - 2009-01-31 10:43

Yes great work!

What about all white?

Or get it 'plastic chrome plated'!

Front AND back!

redbenjoe - 2009-01-31 10:44

I was thinking of those Lasonic replacements!!!! Nod Yes

ghettoboom777 - 2009-01-31 19:59

Fantastic Restoration Transamguy1977!!
I like how your really cleaning it all the way.
My brother used to have a Crown back in the mid to late 70's.
It was a great sounding very large boombox!
Have a great weekend-GB. Smile Nod Yes

transamguy1977 - 2009-02-03 16:57

Ok I need some brutally honest opinions please.
I can easily at this point put it back to original.
I just did a mock up tonight to see how it would look
let me know

transamguy1977 - 2009-02-03 19:01

Thanks Skippy
Not sure im in love with it yet.
trying to envision the stainless VU's
and tuner dial without un taping it.

oldskool69 - 2009-02-03 19:04

That will look awasome! I'm not sure, but I think that if you were able to make the controls portion on top look metallic (or something along those lines) as an accent it would be killer. Nod Yes

moncheeto - 2009-02-03 19:10

it really looks a lot better trans in black,, silver is ok also but being black gives it that really rare box look cant wait to see it all together Nod Yes do it soon before i faint Laugh Out Loud

- 2009-02-03 19:26

WoW, looks really good in black Eek !

I myself, would have painted it a lite Gold color...i personally think that would look best and the whole boombox would come together better in Gold... especially with all the nice chrome etc...but that's just my opinion and what the hell do i know anyways Wink

Nice work!

-gsbadbmr

transamguy1977 - 2009-02-03 19:30

Its funny you mention gold because I was also considering gold as well. but wasn't sure if it would clash with the stainless.
The black really makes the chrome pop but the body lines kind of get lost I think.
Im not so sure i like the black with the stainless either Roll Eyes
BTW gs on your gold conion is the stainless trim tinted gold as well???

moncheeto - 2009-02-03 19:36

trans i guess the way to go is finish putting it together that way you see what it really looks like ,, what i love about that box is the easyness of taking her apart even if you change your mind

Yes, the stainless trim is tinted a light Gold on my C-100. I agree with you about the lines getting lost in black...and again i "personally" think a light Gold would look much much better than the black, and it would all come together nicely i'm sure.

-gsbadbmr

jvc.floyd - 2009-02-03 19:46

i think it looks great! i might do something similar with mine , that totally kicks a$$ dude once she's all lit up it will be wicked.

johnnygto - 2009-02-03 19:49

It might look great once it is all together.

I never like a car I paint until it's assembled and washed, just looks "complete" then... dunno, I'm pretty picky though...

Johnny

redbenjoe - 2009-02-03 20:14

hey frank --while you were on s2g vacation Smile

driptip posted a cool thread --when he did a black m70 --maybe 4 months ago ?

your 850 is , imho, a much nicer design than the m70 --so - expect the best Smile

but - in the meantime --this is TORTURE !!! Mad Tap Toes

get that tape off -- lets see it DONE !!!!

transamguy1977 - 2009-02-04 08:07

Hey Ira I did see the M-70 to be honest I didnt like it in black.
(No offence drip if you read this)
The paint is taking forever to dry because of the cold
then I have to wet sand some spots and clear it.
I will try to untape it tonight if its not still tacky

jt - 2009-02-04 09:06

What a cool thread! Great work Frank!

I have a GE that I've been wanting to do in a metallic blue with silver speaker grills. Now I'm feeling inspired!

transamguy1977 - 2009-02-06 16:13

Here it is in black.
I haven't wired the speakers up yet cause I may buy the lasonic replacements so I have fresh new woofers in it.
Will have to take some better pics with natural light tomorrow.
I think it looks much better in person.

redbenjoe - 2009-02-06 16:31

NICE t/a --black w/white woofs are outfriggenstanding Smile

maybe its only in the pics -- buy the deck keys seem to be lost -- like they should be silver now ?
and a chrome 1/8" trim around the tuning dial might look even better -- not sure

tpr - 2009-02-06 16:37

Awesome Frank!

wow.

featured!

baddboybill - 2009-02-06 17:25

That looks awsome Cool

petey.awol - 2009-02-06 17:26

Homeboy got skills. That sh*t is dope. Everyone neeeds to take lessons from this man on the art of painting.

ford93 - 2009-02-07 04:44

Frank does it again!

oldskool69 - 2009-02-07 04:54

Frank, don't change a thing! You hit the nail on the head! Big Grin

If you want, rather than buy Lasonic replacements that may not match sensitivity and resistance, send the woofs to me for the white treatment. If you've sen my Fishers you know what I mean. Bobby (Fatdog) can also attest to my speaker dressing skills. Labor and material is absoulutely free!

If you elect to do so just tell me what you'd like.

Bright white, cream, eggshell, etc.

Wow. When I get the nessacery parts for my Lasonic 975...I'll be hitting you up Eek

beatbox69 - 2009-02-16 18:47

Eastwood Company has a NEW liquid Chrome paint that looks 100% like chrome when finished! So, if anyone is looking to redo the plastic chrome pieces on their radio's or the whole radio in chrome this is New way to redo the chrome, rather then sending it out to have it re-chromed! It looks 100% like chrome, not the fake looking spray can stuff that looks like silver paint when finished!
You need to do a layer of Gloss Black first then a layer of the liquid chrome, then clear coat for the last layer! A little wet sanding and buff and wax, and you have a chrome radio! It's time consuming, but an all chrome Boom-Box would be kick a@@! I can just see a Panasonic in all chrome or Chrome and a High Gloss Black!
man, that would be killer!

ford93 - 2009-02-17 06:45

Where can you get this product?

killdamon - 2009-04-17 14:19

What happened to yer pix ? Please repost.
