nice boomin' Friday surprise......

jovie - 2008-06-07 21:25

Friday after 5:00PM I checked my local Goodwill for boomboxes and found nothing good.Afterwards I decided to go to the Goodwill in the next town. When I arrived at this second store,I noticed a very square edged boombox sitting on the floor next to the electronics shelf.Hurrying to get a closer look,I found it to be a silver JVC PC-200JW!I've been wanting a silver version of this style JVC for a while. Now my very similar black PC-150 at home has a silver buddy to hang out with.I've always liked the style of these boxes:

As you see,the price was really cheap. However, the decks play button is permanently in the engaged position and I can't get the door open. Also the equalizer sliders have no effect on the sound when they are moved.Interestingly my PC-150 has this same EQ problem.I've heard other's comment in the past about having nonworking equalizers on these models.I'm seriously curious if any of these boxes ever left the factory with this feature actually working.

On the positive side, the highs are excellent and it's very loud!On balance it is a bit shy in the bass making it a better choice for guitar and rock than for the deep bass tones of much electronic music. The line-in on this box is also nice.I used it all day today at work to listen to MP3s from my Ipod Touch.

It's too bad the second store is farther away from where I live. The two nicest boxes I've found at a Goodwill have been found there...but gas is getting expensive!Anyway, thanks for taking a look at my newly acquired JVC! Big Grin

nice one , jovie -
do you have any idea how goodwill calculates their prices ??

like that one could have sold quickly at $16 or at $26 , etc Smile

Pricers are given very general guidelines during their training. From what I have heard,no electronics item can be priced over $30.00 at its maximum.I've seen items I thought we're priced to high, and many that were ridiculously low.An example of too low would be that like new set of 3-way 5 foot tall floor standing Onkyo loudspeakers I saw recently for $6.00.On the other hand, they have a stack of old VCRs at my local outlet priced at $20.00 each that haven't moved for months.I would imagine the real problem is low pay resulting in lack of motivation resulting in worker turnover. Also, perhaps the managers don't watch these employees that closely as everything is donated.

thanks --
agree that as their stuff comes in free -- they have no mark-up guildlines Smile

btw -is your hurricane alley in florida ?

Woah, nice catch.

Wish i could find those kind of prices here in Sweden. Sadly enough our local "Red Cross"-second hand stores only sell clothing and such, no electronics.

And when you -do- find a reasonable second hand electronics store the prices are redicilously high.

I guess i'll have to move to the states..
