Though I can't go thrifting daily anymore,I am able to get to the Goodwill in the next town at least once a week.It is one of their busiest stores so it's always worth a look.Though they had nothing large on my last visit,I did find this high quality mini style boombox. It is a Panasonic RX-C20 with some rather higher end features.
When I first saw this one it was plugged into a test socket with a DC converter. When I tried it out it appeared to be dead. Then I noticed that the converter was marked as 12 volt while the box required 13.2 volts.Unfortunately,It cannot run directly off of AC current and was not loaded with batteries.Even so,I just couldn't resist buying it even though I was unsure it would work.
With no proper adapter, battery power was the only option.I was surprised to see this little unit needs 8 "C" cells! After buying batteries,I was very happy to find it fully functional including very loud sound from its quality deck.
As you can see, this unit has an auto reverse Dolby deck with metal tape capability. The tape controls are a soft touch type without the usual mechanical linkages. It has a very high quality of feel to its operation. All the buttons and front panel silver pieces are genuine metal.
I believe there are speaker cones behind what look like square fabric pieces inside the speaker grills. This make it look sort of like it has the flat panel drivers which were popular some years ago. This one is pretty loud for its size.I was happy to see a line-in feature which always weighs heavily on my decision to actually buy an older box.
I'm going to take this one to work with me tomorrow morning. The tone controls seem to have a wide range of effect.I'm also pretty sure it will more than adequately pass my test for loudness. It's definitely not underpowered for its tiny size.

National/Panasonic really made some nice high quality mini's !
Haven't seen this one before and will be adding this one to my list too.
Nice score Jovie, congrats. Its always nice to walk away with something.
Rats, I thought I donated that to Salvation Army in Lakeland.
I have one of these Panasonic RX-C20's - one of my favorites! Yes, it is very nice. You're right, that it only runs off 13.2 VDC. I have the DC converter for mine, but I might even have another one, if you want me to look.
I believe there's several mini's from Panasonic that really have some nice features and sound. They may not be screamers...but take a look at such other models, like the RX-C50, RX-F33, and RX-F11.
The C20 definiely has the most features, though....music search, soft touch controls, dolby, etc. And separate bass and treble - that's really kind of rare on these small boxes. The RX-C50 has that as well. Make no mistake...that C20 has some weight to it, too!
Congratulations Jovie, very nice find. Some minis are just jam-packed with goodies and high quality features. Enjoy!
This is a real nice little quality unit, great find
