JVC PC-550...stored for 15 years

brutus442 - 2011-03-31 09:53

Hey everyone!

Firstly this is my first post to this fantastic group so go easy!

I came across this site after finding my JVC PC-550 stored in my basement. To be honest I completely forgot about it. After researching this model I found this site and couldn't resist sharing some pictures of my boombox.

Everything works..tape deck, auto reverse and even the LED light is original. I used this unit as a bookshelf system for my old Sony D5a CD player and Technics SLXP 5 cd player . The cassette deck was barely used hence the original bulb!

Here's the pics...mind the dust though!! I did a quick cleanup only

I have more pics but I also found my original Sony WM 101 (blue colour) walkman...I've got to take some pics and post that in the Walkman forum later!

Enjoy the trip back in time...

brutus442 - 2011-03-31 18:10

Thanks for the kind replies everyone.

I live in Toronto, Canada...and sorry to say this, but I think this 550 will live here for a while. I just can't part with it   ...yet.

My teenage son however doesn't understand how this was "portable"???  You have to love the Ipod generation...they know nothing of boomboxes.

brutus442 - 2011-04-02 07:34

@PIONEER, Indeed! A flood of memories came to me...especially the times I was "supposedly" doing homework but was actually air drumming on my textbooks to the 550 in the background!

It's amazing how a simple boombox can rehash great memories!

Sorry Wilrule, Retrodos. At this point I've no intention of selling it and to answer retrodos's question , yes the display does work and on it's original bulb.

I used it primarily as an amplifier for my CD player back in the 80's and rarely used the cassette deck so the power was always shut off. I really love this old girl..I still have the manual (seen in the pics ) and the original bill of sale. Did someone say pack-rat?

Every feature still works and it's never had a battery in the compartment...ever. It was just to damn heavy to carry without them let alone with them!

If you'd like some more pics of the display or angles let me know...I'd be glad to!

P.S. If it weren't for gents like retrodos and DocP, this hobby would have died. A tip of my hat to you gents for keeping these works of art going!

These are the stereos I like to see. When you look at this model you can really see they spent a long while at the design board. They didn't just slap a piece of plastic together with superglue and hope it would last long enough to make it past the warranty. The control logic circuitry for the cassette deck is what makes this model so inviting (IMO). The fact you never used the cassette much and the fact it still works makes this box even that more valuable. Pressing the envelope (at that time) in technology is one thing. Building something to last into a generation of people who can't identify or understand it is another in terms of quality.

Congratulations. That is a beautiful machine. I hope it stays in your family for many generations.......or you could sell it to me lol.

How a simple piece of portable electronics can teleport us back in time is amazing...I guess every "box" (pardon the pun) has a story behind it and that's what infatuates us with them...

mr.vu - 2012-06-09 02:46

bruce.lalonde - 2014-08-22 20:31

Nice unit. I just recent purchased the Silver model pc-55 from Ebay but he did not have the operation manual. I was wondering if you or anyone could scan there manual into pdf format this would muchly be appreciated. I have the service manual so far, for I am going to be adding blue strip leds into the LCD Section Equalizer and maybe one more area.

brutus442 - 2014-08-27 23:25

Hi Bruce. Check a few responses above. The PDF manual is attached to it. Just click on the link.

BTW the silver version is the 55 not the 550. Both are identical in operation so the manual will serve you well

ao - 2014-08-28 00:30

Brutus, was that really your first post?

Yep...I found this site after finding my 550 and knew I was home. As far as "accelerated" Noob to Pro staus, there is a story behind that.

Shortly after joining I suffered a massive heart attack and found myself house bound for 3 months recovering. They couldn't stop my typing so I pounded the keyboard here at S2Go and have kept my sanity all the while..

Epilogue:

Fully recovered, no damage to the heart and still unable to mass a collection like the rest of you

Deech and Nick...It feels like I've been here forever, but I'm more of that guy you see sitting at a bar all the time, wondering if he has a home to go to.

deech - 2014-08-28 11:40

Geoff i remember a pic you posted from a hospital bed !!

Thanks Michiel!

I still have the original bill of sale...I guess I have a tad OCD...I wish I kept the box

michiel - 2015-08-08 05:55

Noooo!!! Why did you get rid of it???

brutus442 - 2015-08-08 08:35

I still have the 550 but the cardboard box went into the bin as I was moving in '91. I never thought that there was other "boombox fanboys" like myself who'd appreciate the original packaging...

Sorry about the confusion Michiel....I'm not working on all cylinders yet

boomboxtaff - 2015-08-08 10:03

I really love the look of this box, and love the light speaker cones against the dark, looks well nice.

tster - 2015-08-08 13:13
