VELA DK-990 (R)

New to my collection, I just received this today all the way from Australia.  The box is in prime condition, and is only missing a couple pieces to make it complete.

It's missing one red slider switch over the balance control, as well as the back left door cover (anyone who has those for sale or knows where I can get them please let me know!).

Aside from that it works like a charm. It was serviced at a repair shop is Aussie-land prior to shipping. I'll post a video after the sun goes down.

p.s... No that is not a red bow on top, it's the a/c cord wrapped up, lol.

Sharp GF-454 has very similar looking red tips, Those Sharp's pretty common, and cheap enough.

I'm not sure 100% about the size, cause I haven't seen them in person, but maybe someone on here has it, and could take a close-up picture for you.

I'm curious, how difficult is it to change one of the speakers in a box like this?  One of them sounds like it could be blown when you play a track with heavy kicks or low frequencies. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Well, I think the only way is - to wait till someone will sell parts of the scrap radio, but if you're desperately want to fix it, you can make a custom one.

Look at the pics. Years ago, one of the members of this site has made the battery lid out of the piece of clear plastic and clips.
You see, it's easy.
For better results you can make it out of the bigger size battery cover cause it has more suitable surface, than clear plastic.
That GF-454 has flat, black cover, so if you're ok with this idea, give it a go.

Here's some shots of the door from the opposite side of the back of the box. (note this box has 3 doors. one for the battery compartment, and one for each lighting compartments. I'm missing the left lighting compartment door if you are looking at the box from the back, as seen in my first posted pics at the top of this thread)

Notice there are two "tube" like pieces on the door.  They are there to keep the back of the speakers center light attachments from sliding back out of placement.

I would need to create (or have one created) a back piece identical to this one, except (as seen in pictures 2, 3 and 4) the longer tube on the left would need to be swapped with the shoter one on the right to fit the box properly.

First of all, you better to post a request, asking pics and sizes of the slider tip, and battery door from GF-454 , to make sure they fit.

If yes, check ebay.de, I don't know why, but in Germany you can see them more often.

Nice boomer man! Even with the missing door and slider, it's still a catch (still looking for a disco of my own). If you think the speaker is blown, why not take it to a speaker shop and see what they say when you play it? I would guess they could tell from just seeing it/hearing it play.

keep in mind, the shipping costs from Russia, ridiculously high,
and some of the boombox sellers are "dark horses" , and misrepresent the state of the item, yes this is not the case when you need a fully working radio, but the seller is dreamer, and starting bid is $133 for that cheapo plasticy radio.

PS: There is a big chance  this AKAI is only rebadged Sanyo.

There is nothing special to read on there.
It just gives you an idea what boxes to look for.

seller says this radio from Finland, as far as I know most radios from Finland, came to Russia from Germany through Finland, via ferry.
Germany is still boombox heaven, still plenty of them, and they are in a better shape than in the US, and for some reason - most of them are SHARP's.
so that was the reason I told you to keep an eye on ebay.de

Hmmmm...I wonder if these blue tip tabs taken from the Sharp GF-700 would fit the disco lite...they could be re-colorized.  Thoughts?

Haven't received a Disco Lite  -- or any boombox -- in recent days, but I have seen a certain Disco Lite version: the Vela Disco Lite DK-7000. It's probably been discussed and featured here on Stereo2Go with member photographs. I bring it  up because it's unfamiliar to me -- more so than is the Dynasty ES-555 or its AKAs -- and because I seem to have come across it tonight for the first time:

Yes, these images are from ClassicBoombox.com. Don't know if earlier S2G posts about various Disco Lite versions also featured these photographs from that website.

Part of what led me to mention this model and to upload these images here is the fact that the presumably four-band radio tuner is located below the twin cassette decks and below most of the front controls.

The uploader of the original DK-7000 images states that the machine was made by Skitronic LTD in China. A close-up shot of the rear data plate seems to confirm that, while also indicating that the Vela Disco Lite DK-7000 is power- and battery-modest: the unit draws 30 watts from the AC supply and runs on 8 "D" cells or 12 volts DC.

The bold, wide ribbing of the rear half of the stereo gives it an atypical, almost worksite ruggedness. The front, too, is obviously colourful with its "multitude of LED's" and its equally spectral graphics. But it's not as gaudy as, say, the Dynasty ES-555. (Tryin' to sound like an audiophile Sony home stereo.)

Yes, style was sought over substance in these audio units, both by the makers and the buyers. Serious collectors will tell anyone as much. But thought that I'd share.
