so here's my accidental boombox collection. accidental because the only boomboxes i actively pursue but are usually too expensive are jvc PC series. i've collected some cool boxes though. i need to find time to put some love in them and get them all 100% up and running.
sanyo m9860 - the only one 100% working right now, listening to it as i type
sony cfs9000 - uses apm speakers and logic controlled deck. tape and amp issues
sony cfd626 - built in 6 disc changer thats stuck
jvc pc200 - tape deck issues
grunding satellite 2100 - fm is out from my bozo buddy putting it too close to his pirate transmitter
the sony cfs9000 may get modded for a class d amp module and better speakers.

what speakers of that size do you think sound better than the APMs ?

the APM's are unique. they have amazing clarity even in the larger home versions. i have to say 6.5"s with GOOD tweeters to keep up with those APM's.

Got APM's on my FH205
but I think it's the huge amp that makes them sing - and them being in seperate boxes
Are they really that special? I think they're more style over substance
How can a square surround be as "compliant" as a round one?
I "do" like the look of them - but if they were "that" good - they would be standard by now.
Who remembers the Technics round flat speakers?
Or those HUGE Quad Electrostatic speakers?

theres something to the square speakers. i believe they are made of honeycomb aluminum. i had a pair of apm home speakers and they exhibited the same qualities, very clear mids and highs. the low end was decent but the clarity is what stood out.
many years ago blaupunkt made some square door speakers for cars and i installed 2 pair in an isuzu impulse. they also had the same amazing mids and highs. pioneer also had their square home driver stint but those are really rare.
i think the reason you dont see more of these unique square drivers is cost of production.

That sony is nice...i had 3 of them...i agree the bass wasn't mind blowing but the mids highs were great

Yes - I believe excursion is limited by the geometric shaped propertys of the square
circle has frictionless sides
Liken the 9000 it does look lovely - Sony had a knack at doing pretty little things you wanted to touch
The predessor to Apple if you will
both companies are evil though
