JVC DC-7 Large "BEAST" w Turntable VIDEO w speaker redo 3 way "40 POUNDS"

G'day all, I am a serious collector of Walkman ( 402 in Collection)
Have a couple mini boomers but decided I wanted to get a bigger louder unit when outside working on car or yard with good sound. Went on Craig's List yesterday and found a JVC DC7 from I believe 1982 -1985 with AM/FM, Cassette AND Linear Straight Line tracking Turntable ( cool I still have records ). Went to see it today locally and I bought 3 ( Panasonic SG-515 from mid 60's and Randix HG-40P ( ouch new addictions I dont need ;-). I will post the other two tomorrow.
Well this giant is pretty awesome to listen to. Certainly above avg. quality sound and LOUD till you hit 7 then old orig. speakers start to distort some but by then its pissing my neighbors off . Radio works excellent, turntable works till middle of record ( straight line tone arm probably grease dried and pushed stopping it ??? ) and cassette can hear motor running fine but shuts off few seconds after starting ( no cog movement) so guessing broken belt ( hard to replace on this anyone ????). Really love how when you open the door the turntable glides out with a wonderful motorized gear sound, very classy. I can tell you I totally was unprepared when I went to lift it up to take to car.... Holy Barbells Batman !!! its just short of 40 POUNDS with 8 D batteries !! Works on Battery or AC cord. Not going to be moving this around much outside ! Speaker boxes are WOOD and do detach. The handle is removable. Has 6 in and 2 in speakers. Neat feature the tuning needle lights up GREEN and when station is tuned in it turns YELLOW and Stereo red light comes on. Does have Aux. input and my WM-DC2 with Sony SEQ-50 5 band equalizer KICKS the sound out. Since the DC-7 only has Low and High switch for EQ (works well enough but disappointing for boomer of this size/quality) the old 5 band Sony portable EQ really wakes up the sound.
I would love to know more about this boomer as could not find much on internet except few videos and topic on tapeheads. Is this a pretty collectable boomer ,quality and sound ? I know it doesn't have a lot of bells & whistles or flashing led's
OH best part think I got a deal paid $60.

I remember the DC-7 on display at Macy*s where I worked when I was 19. I used to blast it on my lunch breaks, and I'll always remember it for it's great looks, massive size, and unique antenna placement. There was a Cobra top there as well that sounded amazing. Nice one John!

John did you get a hold of a manual ?
johnedward - 2013-01-03 13:37
Hey Docs, yes I did get a PDF file Service Manual for the DC7. If anyone needs copy please PM me your email address.
My son finally completed the speaker upgrade with Mirage ( now a Klipsch co.) two way speaker with crossover plus added piezo that is wired into the crossover with a switch mounted to back of JVC speaker box allowing the Piezo to be turned off or on. For some music piezo's are just to "sizziling" so to speak. The sound improvement is astonishing. Now rivals a very good home component system. I will have to do a topic with details and photos and video comparison before after of speaker upgrade.
Here are photos of original speakers in very solid wood speaker cabinet then orig. speakers removed and new speakers w crossover laid out. Final installation keeping original holes in speaker and grills untouched allowing for 3 way configuration.

Outstanding, I am very tempted, though do like the stock setup. I may just have to have a go

Here is video of the DC7 with orig. speakers using a 1984 Sony D-50 Discman both from same year almost. Love the vintage look. Then video with the new 3 way speaker replacement in. WHAT A DIFFERANCE the bass is simply amazing from a boomer. REALY wood speaker boxes wow dont see that often.... And finally a video showing the working Straight line linear turntable ...simply the classiest touch for a boombox of any decade..... Pink Floyd of course . Need to isolate speakers better padding under them as turntable in video picks up bass feedback a little.
ENJOY ALL
ORIG. Speakers
Speaker replacement but not installed in orig. cabinets
Speakers installed in Orig. cabinets TURNTABLE working

The orig. JVC speaker boxes are amazingly hefty and STRONG built. Note extra wood panels inside nearly full size of wall and heavy corner bracing plus the 3/4 in. thick wood. Now thats impressive for a boombox. Also another pic of the replacement speakers next to orig. No wonder the sound improvement is spectacular!!

How well does this JVC DC-7 sound compared to a Similar Large boombox Like a JVC M90 or other model?
Does this have Better bass because of the True separate speakers and real damping of the wooden speaker cabinets unlike a Plastic box boombox?

John Edward , how did the sound change after the speaker upgrade , did the amp handle it ok? They are good, but lack tone controls- instead of rotary bass and treble they have a hi/low switch for each . I had one and chose the JVC DC-33 model, it has an Equalizer , and a motorized LP tray - the DC-7 is mechanical, you push it in and release.
She does look in great shape !
