OK so I bought the red Sanyo mini on a whim cos I was bored and it has turned out to be a cheapie...it was badly listed with crap pics so I took a gamble 
and it didn't really pay off. It'll clean up OK and it has its original sticker on the tape door so we'll see...probably just bung it back on eBay 
At the same time in my bored state I bought another mini (I've been hankering after a decent mini), again badly listed with a poor pic...I seem to like these for some reason 
But this time it turned out nice...strip down and bath for the front, pots and head cleaned, good scrub and polish.
Its a Sony CFS330 and everything works perfectly, it even has a line in on the side. The line is left and right 3.5mm sockets so its slightly weird but with two cables and a headphone splitter we're laughing 
Its heavy and has a real quality feel to it.
Got a nice purple tape door 
So pretty pleased with this one and it seems fairly rare as I can find little about it on the web or the forums

Nice, it looks like a well built unit and in good condition.
I dont know much about Sony 80's portables, they seem less common than Sharps and Hitachis etc, i wonder if this is because they were expensive high-end tec, or because they were crap

Cheers Andy...I'll be taking it with me when I go away so its a cracker Just wanted at least one quality mini with a true line in so I've got one now and I'm really happy with it. The few others I've had so far have all been cheap lightweights that look ok (from a distance ) but are pretty disappointing so I'm gonna ditch the cheapies and keep this nice Sony. Tho I'm still on the look out for a Sanyo M7900 but that'll be sufficient minis for me I reckon.

You should look for a Toshiba RT-SF5 a 2 way mini really solid and excellent sounding player with RCA twin line in and out on side. Usually come up now and then and not go for lot of money.. around 30 or so GBP. I have one love mine. Does only have Vol, Bal, and tone control but pulls off good strong volume and quality sound. Here is pics sorry its dirty use it outside a lot.

Just has tone control so I can't turn the bass up but I've got a music app on my iphone that acts like an EQ so I can do it that way...its amazing what a difference it makes. I'll keep an eye out for that Tosh, thanks for the tip

This Toshiba along with Northerners sony is a very nice box with many features
for everyday use.
