Very tough restoration of Pioneer SK21..

Just got this Pioneer from member Larry of Boomboxery. He received it after buying it but didn't have room so he sent it straight to me in original packed box that he never even opened. Well I received it today and it was packed so so but that wasn't the real issue. When I went to test it I got nothing at all. So I opened it up and to my amazement the power wires and antenna wires were unhooked. Then I noticed something else. Tons of wires that were from deck were all cut. I mean every single wire including the head and erase head wires. Some dumb A$$ cut all of them. I was in awe but the restoring must go on   It's too much to type so lets just put it this way. I was able to reattach all wires by soldering them back to board. Luckily the moron who cut them did it close enough and because wires were long enough it wasn't to hard. The only other issue was the wires from heads. I ended up using a set of heads that came out of parts GF777 deck with all wires still intact. The heads were the same only difference was the grounding of head but I used ground wire off the 777 deck and everything is fully attached, maybe close to 15 wires total were cut. I have pics of most of them   I also cleaned everything because it was pretty dirty. I also put new belts on and cleaned and demagnetized head. I painted grills and used black permanent marker on speakers. Cleaned up all chrome and straightened out pause button. To my amazement after I was all done getting it back together and replacing broken antenna the box worked excellent. I adjusted azimuth on tape head and it sounded beautiful. I just couldn't how stupid some people are. Well here are the pics. Enjoy

top work bb        had a few like that wires cut , elastic bands as belts , bare wires and of course sellotaped wires  .  also burnt boards were people use to hot an iron when soldering and it ends up with half the trace"s missing .

i once bought from a boot sale a small box (forget what it was lol)but it was dead when plugged in so i opened it up,only to find some dick head had cut all the speaker wires inside, and not cut them so i could easily re solder them down again!so in the end i had to re wire the whole speaker systemwhy do some people do this?whats their problem?that pioneer is an exellent example and its full marks for you for re wiring it and the pleasure is all yours to see it successfully running again-nice job and congratulations

Hey Deech! I was looking for some info on how to repair the decks on these Pioneer models when I encountered this old reply from you on this post from Baddboybill. I agree, it'd be nice to get your hands on one of these. It looks likes a 21, and you can tell, it's a nice size pair of speakers! The good thing about this one is that if it gets too loud you can just pull the cord and it goes silent in a second. You know, I am talking about the radio!

Wow!!

That's a great job  Some right turkeys out there & one can only wonder why anyone thought that cutting the wires was a good idea???

I have never seen one of these before, is it a late 1970's model??

I've just bought a SK-606L which looks beautiful but the pixies have been inside & pretty much destroyed any chance of repairing her

Very satisfying to have your Pioneer all working again
