Pair of Sharp GF-9191s

schneil - 2013-10-02 15:39

Here's a pair of 9191s. Ones my "barn find" 9191e that Si restored for me in June.

The other's a bit of a beater going to Si for a deck transplant with the minter and he's going to mod it.

The beater has two short wave bands, fine tuning and a line out.  My 'E' has long wave, no fine tuner and a DIN socket.

love a bit of oldskool hardcore! sounds like a track carl cox played a lot around 92ish?

northerner - 2013-10-02 23:44

Looks pretty good for a beater   Damage is on the back and top corner, front is good apart from a bit of an iffy respray. Should get my hands on these tomorrow when my sister brings them up north I'll have three 9191's in the house at that point lol Will have to take some pics with all three together!

It's by dance conspiracy, called dub war chapter 1.  Yeah a very big tune 1992ish, very "white gloves".

A really good oldskool mix cd I used to play with this on was disc 2 of Dreamscape ESP.

Its sat in the house somewhere.  Might start giving you flashbacks

stereo.mad - 2013-10-03 03:21

One of the nicest looking boxes of its size

Never seen one in real, but agree they look lovely! Are these bigger in size compared to a 9090?

northerner - 2013-10-04 04:44

Yeh they're bigger...bit taller and a bit wider...both nice boxes

Thanks, now I need a 9191 too haha. I always had the impression they were just the same boxes with different front and look.

northerner - 2013-10-04 08:11

Yeh I've got both and they are different boxes both in size and sound...I prefer the 9191

michiel - 2013-10-04 11:11

The 9090 doesn't sound really special. But it's a nice mini indeed. Also like the looks of the 9292, but they are little hard to get... Let's start with a 9191, don't have that many sharps yet

northerner - 2013-10-04 11:28

You don't like the 9090 sound?...I think its pretty good for its size. The 9292 is much rarer but I actually prefer the look of the more common 9191...definitely worth getting IMO

claret.badger - 2013-10-05 01:24

every collection should have a 9191

one of my first

and I wished I bought more when they were 30 quid boxes

northerner - 2013-10-05 02:04

Well there are three in my house at the moment...the two in this thread and my existing one

The beater doesn't look that bad in the pics above but in person it's pretty rough lol...but as it was very very cheap I'm not complaining...looking forward to a good restoration/modding project

michiel - 2013-10-05 02:33

The 9090 doesn't sound bad, but it's not like whoooieee that's a fat sound!!  All my sharps are a little like that. They look good, but the sound is kind of average. But will keep my eyes open for a 9191 or 9292 for sure. Sadly even locally they go expensive if one pops up.

schneil - 2013-10-05 08:44

Go on Si a shot of all 3

Has to be done, it's like a family reunion

Ps what is the model number of the beater?

northerner - 2013-10-05 09:03

There will defo be a shot of all 3 soon...and it's an 9191XE

schneil - 2013-10-05 14:18

So it's a 9191E, a 9191H and a 9191XE.

Any difference between the E and the H?

jt.techno - 2013-10-23 00:43

I just aquired a 9191X ... the idea being to sort one good 9191 as my previous 9191E has amp problem on left audio channel ... so my question is ... should I move good amp board from the X to the E to get a single good box or move working cassette unit from E to X to get a single good box ... any suggestions which would be the better move as both cases are about same fair condition? I have not yet investigated the minor differences between the two, hence why I am after some guidance :-)

northerner - 2013-10-24 11:57

Well moving the deck is much easier!

jt.techno - 2013-10-24 12:20

True - a 5 minute job to move deck but guess just wondering what main differences are between X and E as it seems very minor looking around outside of the cases ... first one I spotted was the X has no on/off switch on rear and has rectangular 2 pin power socket rather than shaped fig8 ... although fig8 lead fits OK to power it ... also X has fine tuning dial (guess for SW bands) whereas E does not have fine tuning dial ... otherwise all looks similar :-)

northerner - 2013-10-24 13:14

Personally I'd sort the X just for the fine tuning dial and because the E seems to be the common version in the UK

jt.techno - 2013-10-24 14:52

Thanks for the advice - I think also that time may play a big part of my decision as I know the longer job will ultimately never get done but a clean-up of the X and swap in of already fixed tape unit from the E is more a reality :-)

I don't get why the E has no fine tuning, when it has only 1SW band.  You would've thought fine tuning was more needed if the band was more cramped?

I'm wondering if the on/off switch on the back may have been for some obscure regulation somewhere??  Was E a UK or Europe-only model?

"E" is version for UK market, it operates only from 240v, and has the mains switch on the back, because of the british electricity standards, unlike other countries - you guys have to use fused AC plug.

Also, the manual is only in english language - so it's only for the UK market.

"H" is version for other european countries. It's multivoltage - 110,220,240v, and the manual in other europen languages.

Both of them, "E" and "H", have tuner with LW frequency, cause LW broadcasting was very common mostly in Europe. This is why the world version "X", for other countries, has no LW frequency.

northerner - 2013-10-25 11:26

Ok that makes it clearer...never could see how my H was different to an E...shoulda turned it around

It would be easier to move the cassette unit, as it's the same and only held in by screws.  The board might be different on the X and E.  My E is a UK model so prob has a different transformer to the X and no line out.

Ah yeah I remember before the early 90s we used to get appliances without plugs.  You'd get the lead and no plug on the end, so whatever you bought, you had to pay a little extra and get a plug as well.  Then you had to wire up the damn thing when you got home.  I think it was a hangover from some archaic time when plug sockets in the UK weren't standardised.  Just as well we use fuses as our sockets are on a ring main so high current!  Not sure why we'd need a cunningly hidden off switch on the back though, none of my other radios have that apart from the superwoofer.

On the 240V thing, 10 years ago it was agreed all EC countries would go to 230V +/- 10%.  So we're officially 230V, but my house is still running 240V.  So maybe the 220-240 transformers the same in E and H?
