The plastic these relics sat on could fabricated, Most important features was the tape decks as well as the radios audio channels for recording (Ive seen radios sound channel get blown, then it becomes a bar mantel piece for conversation, or a trashcan casualty =( ive never seen someone repair blown sound channels, or the whole power supply if radio stopped working from people setting the dual power switch 120 to 220 setting to wrong voltage...) I still do alot of recording on cassette because its fun, just as it was done when these classic boomboxes with the LED VU Meters had come out, and those cassettes hold up lot better. Had tapes for 30 years and if 1 snapped, I re-spliced it, how many DVDs do todays people have to recopy before it gets scratched > or the dog took it as a frisbee, LoL- todays people having the USB port MP3 equipment dont seem to appreciate the humor...
