Sony CF-580

michiel - 2015-11-14 03:44

Got this box from the US ebay for $40. It arrived last week and today I finished the overhaul. It only had mechanical problems and was very dirty inside. Belts, hardened grease, idler tires, bad configuration in the auto stop system, that sort of problems. Electrically it was still in great shape. Its missing the chrome trim on the sides. Dudes I LOVE the sound out of this box! Nothing beats a high end 70's box!!

Hope you enjoy the pics. I'm very happy to have this machine in the collection

edit: yes it's standing in the rain sorry

Nice one Mike ! Chrome looks like a mirror

in this one and i like the  fact that its a 70s bbox.

late 70s was a time when most companies

put all their efforts and high quality parts

to the latest technology in audio.

Sony did build this one like a tank.

If i remember well

driptip has one of those.

hisrudeness - 2015-11-14 03:59

One of my favourites. I can't think of many more over the top quality boxes than this one.

I Listened to Test match special on this one when we won the Ashes back from the Aussies this summer on this radio.

Well done on this. I have a spare in the garage but don't know if it has the grilles. I'll check.

That's an amazing picture. It's no wonder modern boomers are crappy.  Mass Manufacturers nowadays would never build anything as intricate and that many moving parts.

Targeted this before the M90 in Litfans collection.  Tuner dial not turning nor is cassette - any suggestions for when I get around to it?

Probably belts for the deck and a snapped tuner string for the tuner Joe.

bookman - 2015-11-14 13:48

You make it sound simple?

hisrudeness - 2015-11-14 15:10

belts are bad enough but tuner strings are horrible!

boeingman777 - 2015-11-14 15:29

Nice, and a cool looking interior.   Congrats.

michiel - 2015-11-15 01:55

She looks indeed fabulous naked While I was working on it, I showed her to quite a lot of technically interested people, they all liked it! The major blow came when they felt how heavy she actually is.

Funny, in the past I uploaded a lot of inside pics of the boxes I was working on. Stopped that because of the lack of interest. Maybe I should pick it up again.

Cool advert HR! Yours look so perfect!

My idea is using a good view screen and flipping past a bunch of pictures in a video and then showing the real thing and playing it all in the same video make for a bit better collection of information anyway that is what I have done in the past, going toward the future as you can skip past the picture's or pause on them and then see the radio working and hear it all in the same screen

michiel - 2015-11-15 08:59

Don't know exactly what you mean James, but it does sound very smart!

I have a few already done in the 'can' but not uploaded yet and more planned of taking pictures as I open and service what I can with parts I have or not available at that time.

Example would be the Crown CSC - 850 radio ...

here I'll share the folder with you for example

(August 20150007 to 00015 M41 vids Crown 850 950 17 August 2015 sold)

^ all of these video's have not been uploaded ok ^

When I get to them - then you will have a visual of looking at the (real thing "the boombox" ) and looking at my 17 inch screen laptop for the picture review & then seeing the actual radio play - Not in the laptop but sitting right next to the laptop in 3D but shot in 2D

Hope you can understand this educational display for all to see and I changed the lights to Daylight - so not more yellow looking silver boombox.

deech - 2015-11-15 09:39

James if possible post a video to see the difference.

Right now I am working on the 2 sold boombox as I have to get that on it's way  1st.

radio.raheem - 2015-11-16 09:09

I love 70's boxes to, most notably my jvc 390en's, congrats on another fine restore Mike, i just picked up one of the best sonys of all time lad, the sony f40 from the litfan collection, always waned this box, just wish i had acquired her under better circumstances, she weighs in at 12kg that's 3kg more than the pioneer 909, superb sounding boxes, the f40 is only small but my god and speaking of restore posts mike you're 909 restore post is one of my faves sunshine, cheers for you're great posts as always

michiel - 2015-11-17 12:34

Wow, a Sony F40! Thats one of the most magical boxes I've never seen! Try to post some pics of her when she arrives RR!! Lol yeah that 909 restore was fun! And she still works! How is yours? Did it already arrive?

radio.raheem - 2015-11-17 19:19

there both here mike my friend...the cfs f40 is almost as good as the m90, just not as loud, and both seem to have had new belts, pics in the next few days my man

bookman - 2015-11-18 00:43

This is another gem from Litfan collection which I will keep.  Have noticed this has a tape input which some others do not.  Need to look at tuner drive string and cassette belts and have gently prised back off; how the does the front come off?  Have spanners, pliers and hammer at hand if these will help?

Hi bookman, you can pull out the chassis from the front section. I found no hidden screws, but did open the cassette door. Not much force was needed in my case. Yours is an European version. They have DIN tape input. My version from VS doesn't have the extra rec/pb din connector. Have fun with the repair And don't forget to check the idler tires in front of the deck.

That is lovely.  How very Sony to hide the fact that it had additional side-shooter speakers.  5 years later manufacturers were adding false grills to create the illusion that their products had more speakers.

Sony CF-900S

jamesrc550 - 2015-11-20 09:28

Long ago I was sold on this model ( cant say just how long ) and then '1'  came up for sale somewhere and I was the top bidder and because it was oversea's and the shipping was only for that country in the listing - so the seller asked for "more shipping money" so I sent "more shipping $$" and now I have this model

Please while it may be fresh in your knowledge, what size and kind of belts did you replace this in this model with?

Sony CF-900, was made in 1978 sony 78-21

michiel - 2015-11-20 09:47

I'm not sure about the belt sizes James. I just picked two out of my stack of belts. It needs two square belts. So its a simple box to replace belts. My guess is that the capstan/flywheel belt is around 70MM and the auto-stop belt around 40MM. But that's an estimate!

Don't expect a freakin' fast answer from James, he has been absent from the site ever since he promised to ship my boxes for the exhibition. Apparently he's freakin' slow as far as deals are concerned.

Here's my shot in the dark: Sony CFS 1990

Indeed no answer from James...... That's bad Sal! You did not know James has a very bad reputation for selling boxes??? Personally I will never deal with him! Isn't he banned anyway? Did you try other ways to contact him? YouTube?

samovar - 2015-12-13 03:57

Thanks for solidarity Michiel, but I wouldn't jump to conclusions about James. He has just made a comeback and I am sure he'll soon produce rock solid evidence that the parcel was actually shipped to me.

But enough with hijack of this thread. Back to the point: did I get the box model right? I believe the pic portrays a Sony CFS 1990, an old favorite of AO if memory assists me.

Without side chrome trims also, no battery door, need both antennas an tape dosen't work and some scuffs and marks of the "crasiest and free" 70s period of time.
