So that they could reflect against a wall behind it. The bass sounds 10 times bigger when you have a wall to reflect it against.

The sides are angled in at the back,so the subs are aimed towards the rear somewhat.

It is a quality built unit Pioneer. It pounds out the bass very well. It sounds a lot bigger than it is.
