Just curious for anyone who'd done this: When using a car head unit how long was your play time off batteries?

i wouldnt know where to start.for me i just prefer the factory models-but if you have the technical know-how,the imagination and flair to build your own box then fair game to you

that would be, But i will not use car radio's or battery's etc to me that is not a boom box..... just my opinion and not ment to offend anyone just my 2cent's.....i have quit a few let say scrap box's thought of using different peice's and what not's from each one to make something real funky i have an idea jus a matter of making it come to life.You can really make a killer box and a never seen before Boomer.Because the boom box's are usually made of a plastic mould ,i was thinking a fiberglass,casing should do the trick.

As you can see i have some beater box's kickin about there's also some good one's in the pile but some will be used for part's to make a home made GhettoBlaster.

Yes I have built three units. All with car radio and lead-acid battery and speakers in one "portable" package... One weighing a whopping 19 kilos. One has a 230V to 12V transformer for mains use. Will post pics some day.

And the play time is depending on the capacity of the battery, of course. But normally a car radio takes roughly 1 ampere so you do the math. Play time varies though, temperature, use cycles and source type affect the play time.

This I agree with, all of it. Many times it's been that I've seen mention of a "major DIY boombox" only to see it's a car stereo in an enclosure. I have nothing whatsoever against such things, but it's always a bit of a letdown when I'm hoping to see some true custom work: electronics, enclosures, etc. Parting out some things from other boxes is certainly feasible for things like tape mechanisms, radio assemblies and CD player stuff. Amplifiers, preamp/front-ends, cassette electronics, power supplies, etc aren't particularly difficult and should be custom-designed. And with modern rapid-prototyping techniques ("3-D printing", etc) you could build an enclosure a lot better looking than your usual hobbyist project.

For those around the Bay area in CA, we ought to build a few whopper custom boxes and flaunt them at Maker Faire next year.

I know its not verry pretty - but it filled the need I had for portable stereo that was loud. it lasts about 5 hours play time at a verry loud volume - and the batterys recharge up nicely still so it should last a while I hope
