Yup, that's it dkd, Mine is eta the 6th
Hopefully I'll be the first Canadian to get one
Congrat's DKD, your thread is what helped me get my order in
Mine is due to arrive today (in Detroit), according to the UPS tracking number. From California to here is a long, slow ride across rivers and mountains and deserts and valleys and stuff.
DKD, if it hadn't been for your post on February 26th, I'd still just be wishin' and hopin'. Thanks!!
Review pending.
I may just wait and see if any local stores get them - they might have a better "sale" price. Does anyone know if Creative Zens will work with this?
peter.griffin - 2008-03-04 08:24
Hey Fatdog, don't know if it will "dock" like an ipod, but you can always use the aux-in?
I just noticed that it supports SD cards for MP3 playback. I wonder if the navigation buttons (FF, REW, etc.) will work if you use the SD card. Can anyone try this out?
Peter Griffin, Baby Boomer. I'm glad I could help.
I sent in a review but I don't know where *TPR* put it.
Ahh it's in the boombox chat area.

Box next to box next to box... If only every old boombox maker would get on the Lasonic bandwagon, goin' shopping for a new box would be... Man, words can't really describe the feeling.
DKD -Your review in the Chat area was really nicely done! With the "NO OT answer" warning on that thread,I didn't think I should reply in it.However,I have a few questions maybe you can answer. Will the I931 go uncomfortably loud like many old school 1 piece boxes? In other words,is it your opinion the I931 can be classified as a "BLASTER" or does this seem more in the category of "Ipod speaker dock"?Do the bass and treble controls have a lot of effect on the sound? How about the sound presets?Though you say it lacks bass can you dial in a lot of high frequency presence? If not, rolled off highs and lows might suggest a box compromised by single full range drivers. As Pepino indicated, can you also confirm that the box has actual working tweeters?Lastly,is there a classic era 1 piece to which you could compare it's sound? If it's on par about with the Maggy8443(despite many peoples complaints about that box) you mentioned in your review,I feel we have been given a return to at least "acceptable" old school performance.

Will all of the hype and reviews I can't wait to see this box in person at my local Fry's.
US$219? Woah. At under £120, it's beginning to look like pretty good value.
If it goes on sale in the UK, I'll bet it's for £199
If so, I might be asking one of you to buy me one & ship it!
How is everyone ordering this box? Is it from their website or somewhere else? How does this box feel quality wise for those of you with one? Compared to an original 931 of course.

Yes, they had them available on the Lasonic website for maybe a half a day or less before they sold out.
I will only say this and leave the rest of my opinions out. I wish they would have made the old ones out of this same new plastic. It seems to be a "softer" plastic not nearly as brittle as what was in the past. I havent taken a hammer to it yet but in general I think these will hold up better as far as cracking and breakage. If nothing else, plastic has improved over the last 20 years.
When I used to carry my TRC-931 back in the late 80's, I dropped it plenty of times (when the strap I used to have on it slipped) and nothin' ever broke.
The sight of batteries rollin' down the street...

Did you ever try shipping it?

Well, here is my brief review.
Hopefully I'm the first one to review it in Canada eh!
got it yesterday, my early 40th b-day gift
Here it is with my ipod inserted.
As already mentioned, it is bass shy. But the highs are really nice. I set it to "loudness" and adjusted the bass to 7, and treble to 6. It's not too bad. No bass like the M70, but nice mid bass, and great highs. And it is still pretty loud. And the sound is much better with the ipod then fm radio.
I find the plastic looks cheap, but it does look tough. Mine already had a scratch on the protective coating, oh well. And what's the deal with all the decals on the box, they don't do anything. My old TRC935 has the same thing, though not as much.
The remote is awesome. You can control the ipod, and boombox with it. And I think someone was asking, you can fastforward and rewind the SD/MMC music
I might fiddle with it to see if I can fit the woofers from the 935 into the I931, maybe the will help the bass. Overall I'm pretty happy with it
Eh...?

Congrats Peter G.!!! I have yet to hear one in person and am somewhat curious, but I will wait for it to hit mass market so I can touch n' feel before I cart it and buy.

Thanks Oldskool, to tell you the truth. The plastic material, though tough, makes it look more like a toy

You know, my wife said it looked like something you get your eight year old!
And it really does!
Someone is going to get it right and make a mean looking sidewalk crusher the way it ought to be. I hope...
masterblaster84 - 2008-03-07 12:23
Thanks for the review Peter.
I would like to see one in the store before I plunk down my $'s but for the price it's very tempting.
peter.griffin - 2008-03-07 16:10
Ok, I'm a bit embarassed to admit this. I forgot to take off the protective plastic film. I was pissed that there were scratches, but it was actually the film
Now it look much better
masterblaster84 - 2008-03-07 18:31
Peter, that's hillarious but I'm glad that's all it was.
Ah... never mind on a few questions.
I somehow skipped page three of this thread.
Yeah, I think for many of us... walking into the store, (all the way to the back at my local Fry's) to the portable section. Seeing them lined up on the shelf like several dozen cheap and nasty DVD players will be the thrill of a life time!
I cant wait!
Anyone buy two yet? One to leave in the box never to be openned?
Hi everyone!
I went to local Fry's Electronics store and bought one today for $199+tax. They had 2 in stock. One was the open box but they did not want to give me any discount on that so I went with unopened one.
Brought it home, opened it up - wish they did not put so much pop corn on top...
My first impression is more or less in line with others:
1. Plastic looks pretty cheap.
My box actually did not have a stright bottom and would wobble a bit if pushed...
2. Size wise it is comparable to M90/5350 but thinner.
3. Power cord is built in - I would prefer it is not.
4. Default settings on both bass and treble are low, so that had to be adjusted right away.
5. Comes with 5 adapters that suppose to work with multiple MP3 players. Interestingly enough, there was not one that would work with iPOD Nano which my daughter had, so we just plugged it in without any adapter.
6. MMC/SD slot is pretty slick - you can see the song titles on the display which is a big plus in comparison to my MobiBlue tape. However... a BIG minus is that when you press stop and thn play again it starts from the first song again!! That is really inconvenient!
7. Have not tried the USB slot.
8. With iPOD Nano - everything worked fine, though there was no way to select the particular song - you could only play them in sequence. You can Fast Forward and Rewind within the song with remote.
8. Sound wise - it seem to play differently with different media - which is kind of strange on one side. On another side, it may be due to different sound levels. I know that all my MMC/MobiBlue songs are adjusted to 89Db, where my daughter's iPOD and radio would typically be set to higher Db settings.
Bass is really not that bad. Of course it is not a Kaboom or M90 or 5350 but it has a decent bass. I don't have any other Lasonic to campare it to and someone was saying that M70 has more bass than this box - to me it was about the same. It seem to have a little air port on the front right under the ipod window and the way the plastic is molded leaves not many parts that can rattle on high volume.
Overall - I am pleased with this purchase.
I gave it as an early 17th birthday present to my daughter who was thrilled with it! That along made my day as she previously was pretty indifferent to my boombox collecting hobby
the grills are shinney!!!!
I got one as well and am impressed with it. I wouldn't rank it in the top 5 of any boombox list, but as far as an everyday box to take fishing, sittin' out back drinking beer, etc...i give it a thumbs up.
For us guys in the uk can only watch helplessly, where is it possible to buy a lasonic outside usa without the high shipping cost involved.nowhere i guess.
i contacted lasonic no reply asking if there were any dealers outside usa or if they would like to appoint one.
im sure there are many of us outside usa who would like to get a hold of a brand new ghettoblaster.
I think ill look forward to a holiday in usa and not forgettin an empty suitcase to take.
If anyone knows of a solution on how to get one PLEASE let us know.
Happy
masterblaster84 - 2008-03-25 21:07
Happy don't feel bad, I'm in the US and I tried contacting Lasonic but never got a response either.
Just get it from markertek.com for $169
I ordered mine on the 3.22.2008 and here is the mail I got today......
Good morning Chris,
Here is the information that you requested. The item that you order part # I931 is shipping today. You are looking at a shipping estimate of 23.59.
If you need further assistance please feel free to contact me. Thank you for choosing Markertek and have a great day.
And by the way, it also said "coming soon" or whatever it said and that doesn't seem to matter.....
peter.griffin - 2008-03-27 09:49
Good stuff Kitt. Hopefully, with your "skills", you can offer some helpful tips to make the I931 really "thump"
Went downtown and got mine from an electronics store close to The Sound Of Market record shop a few hours ago ($160.50 with tax included)... I agree with everybody who said this thing is bass-shy - especially when it comes to songs with any kind of 808 style bass kick (the woofers don't move anywhere near the level of the TRC-931). Other than that, for what it is, it's pretty impressive... and pretty loud! Overall, I'm happy I bought it and can't wait to take it to work next Saturday.
so Monolithic,
how did Saturday turn out?? any good reviews?

I'll let you know when Saturday gets here.
Actually, I'm takin' it to work, not necessarily to show off and get opinions, but to see how well it sounds in a noisy environment (I work in a factory) in comparison to some of my other boxes.
let us know what your coworkers think about it and have you taken an 80s bbx to work?

Not yet... Saturday is mostly for clean-up and maintenance so most of my co-workers won't even be there.
Check this out:

I still want one - it's just so OTT, especially for the UK.
My son would go crazy for one...
Can anyone tell me how much are they selling for retail in the USA now?
peter.griffin - 2008-06-27 11:13
Hey Iso, I've heard anywhere from like 129 to 150ish.
There's a whole bunch on ePay for 149-151.
I wish I can find one here in Miami for $129..
They cancelled todays clean-up yesterday. Guess I'll have to wait another week.
well b waiting for ur coworkers reactions

I forgot to post this last Friday...
I took the i931 to work Thursday and a few of my buddies (the buddies that mattered) liked it. Being as tho it doesn't have the bass of the TRC-931 and the fact that my work environment is very noise heavy (it's a waste turning the bass all the way up because of wide open spaces, very high ceilings and whatnot), the i931 is the perfect workbox!
On the other hand, listening to the i931 a little while ago and listening to the TRC-931 right now at home... The old box'll wipe the floor with the new box! EASILY!! And the left tweeter is (possibly) blown !!! I mean, I don't know if Lasonic are using different woofers these days or what, but you can't get these new boxes to boom for anything!
Maybe if I put the old woofers in the new box...
when I play my cassette's through the Aux in I get sufficient bass, see here below for 19 seconds worth :-)
Speakers Pounding
panasonic.fan - 2008-07-15 19:42
Speakers moving doesn't translate to good bass. The bass on the i931 sounds extremely hollow, which is not unexpected. As cheaply made as the originals were (the square models), they had much better lower end sound.
