I have a couple of these recent production Sony models like this CFD-G55. Mine are the CFD-G50, essentially the same save for some minor styling changes. Really good models with recording from CD/radio onto cassete and Remote Control.Bi-Amped."power drive 2 stage Subwoofer Boost and 'Line in' on mine. Uses type 1 cassettes only.
Sony are one of the few manufacturers (along with JVC, Panasonic & possibly Philips) who have actually kept a half-decent sounding boombox in their product line-up of recent years.
Unfortunately for fans of the classic look, the designers were mostly allowed to run riot with their 3D CAD packages & ...er "creative ideas". Stuff like this Sony is the end result.
One day, someone other than Lasonic might notice that a retro looking boombox with this sort of technology in it will be a good seller...

Isolator I wouldn't hold my breath on that hope. Seems the trend is continuing towards all in one mini devices that combine Phones, MP3 players, GPS, Walkie Talkies, Flashlights, Movie players, mini computers and what ever else they can think of stuffing into a device the size of your car keys. With the exception of Lasonic and Teac nobody seems the least bit interested in classic style boomboxes. These so called creative types these days seem to think everything should be round and flowing with lots of curves, a trend I don't particularly care for. Unfortunately I think Lasonics i931 was largely a disappointment becuase it was kind of cheap, light, has some issues with the ipod section and the Bass it produced was less than expected and desired. If any manufacturers were watching I don't think the i931 would have convinced them there was a viable market for these products.
People have forgotten about the good sound.
Oldschool boxes sound better, big speakers, more power, more room inside to improve acustics.
Many friends of mine looks a M70 like a dinosaur, but they get impressed with its sound quality. They can't believe the sound quality !!!!!!!
Perhaps good sound and good power, even in an oldschool package would be a good seller.
But doing marketing of an oldschool-look boombox because its sound quality will be a hard job.
Most people buys good looking devices with large displays.
If they just make mini or midi hifi system with handles. However i do like the old looks..
Sorry, but those new Sony boomboxes are hideous, in my opinion.
For all I know, they could sound great... They don't look great tho...
I found a cosmeticlly banged up one on my garbage route and now i have it in the truck daily. They really do sound pretty nice considering the amount of background noise a garbage truck makes. I'm sure I was the ire of north east Queens NYC on the midnight shift over the winter. Suckers are reasonably loud.
