You never know what you're going to find at CES. At the Lasonic booth, it's like the 80's never ended!

Lasonic Boomboxes

old threads here!

At least they don't seem to be taking themselves too seriously:

old threads here.

I would pay much more than 160 dollars if the box would be "solid state" standard and last for several decades like a tpr...

I hope we will read the first reviews about the i931's sound and performance ,build quality soon!

- 2008-01-08 10:54

I dunno, maybe it's just me, but somehow i find it hard to beleive that it will be selling for so cheap...it kinda makes you wonder what the over-all build quality is like...probably the same as the pricetag...CHEAP Laugh Out Loud

Let me get this straight, your saying that Lasonic will decrease the quality of the 931? Is that possible? Wouldn't that mean pieces will fall off if you merely pick it up?
Laugh Out Loud

I have a 931 and 975 and do like them however if they were built any cheaper you would break them just by picking them up. Nod Yes

I'm not saying NOTHING about the quality of it until i see one Wink . Prices often reflect quality.

Let's face it, the majority of the Lasonics were cheaply made...with the exception of the 920 that IMO is the most indestructable boombox that i personally own and ever seen. I did the "gsbadbmr" test with the 920...it's a TANK.

I will wait to hear feedback from some members here before i'll even consider buying this new one.

I'm wondering about this picture:

what different kinds of boxes are exhibited here?

the usual new version of the trc931,
PLUS Eek the dvd version?

If i`m viewing the picture more carefully:
top left the trc931 new version ,top right the old version (one of them)

bottom left the dvd version -and bottom right the i931

yes that`s what I doubt, about the quality -for this price quality is nearly impossible...

I AgreeI'm really only joking, I agree that at $169 and 15 pounds it's not going to have much quality built in. I was making a joking comparison to the old lasonic 931 and it's cheapness, yes I have one and it is built cheaply in comparison to other brands. I'm probably not telling any of you anything you don't already know since it seems most of us own or have owned the old 931.
Big Grin

I'll hold final judgement for the time when we can get our hands on one of these new 931's. Nod Yes

monolithic - 2008-01-08 14:35

The price surprised the hell outta me! I kinda expected a $250 price tag. But on the other hand, the TRC-931 cost around $125 20 years ago, so I don't see what the big deal is.

My thing is, with 12 watts of power per channel that the i931 has, will the old box blow out the newer one?

erniejade - 2008-01-08 14:50

I thought the old box only had 12 watts also....?

It will depend on the woofer efficency rating to be honest. Remember to double the volume you have to increase power basically by 10x

mafiagato - 2008-01-08 14:59

looks good but i think need a tape too, like a tribute

thx for the pics and info

jcyellocar - 2008-01-08 15:00

What? No CD player either? I guess it's just a radio and MP3 player.

Holdin' on to a dead technology wouldn't be a smart move for Lasonic... or any manufacturer of electronics for that matter. When's the last time you saw blank cassettes bein' sold in Circuit City?

panasonic.fan - 2008-01-08 15:48

The saving grace is the USB flash memory compatibility.

Maybe they can finally get the damn sound right on this model. Early gen 931's had good bass and crap high's, later models had the opposite. C'mon Lasonic, I want to be a customer.....

That might be due to the supposed "fake tweeters" put in later models that I've been hearin' people yap about since I joined this site. I wouldn't know anything about that 'cause I've never heard a "rounded" 931.

success - 2008-01-08 16:21

Oh no !!!! it hasn't any mechanical device ...
no more pinch rollers, belts, optical pick-ups
servomotors, only chips ... a sef powered portable speaker system with radio Roll Eyes

monolithic - 2008-01-08 16:22

On another note, I think Lasonic - for the moment - should sell these thru their website. The vendors will come, but in the meantime...

No more popped and chewed-up tapes, dead motors, belt replacements, tape hiss, head cleaning, blah blah blah...

I own 4 boxes and none of the tape decks work! Sorry if I don't feel your pain.

jlf - 2008-01-08 17:15

I think Im going to get the white one to match my white Gemini CD Turntable I use with all of my ghettoblasters.

It looks great!

Wish I knew the release date! Has that been mentioned and I over looked it?

- 2008-01-08 18:15

the DVD vershion seems to be the best looker,

shame about the crappy preasets instead of a real eq

Here's the spec sheet from the original TRC-931, seems the specs for the new model fall short on the power in comparison. We will need to give it a run to find out the actual differences.

jlf - 2008-01-08 19:07

So this spec sheet has me wondering if the new version can be modified for more power?

Possibly using O.G. parts from a donor/parts box 931?

Higher end speakers even?

I imagine the lighter weight is due to no tape mech, etc. All that being replaced by microchips...

The best part might be 'warranty.' Smile

erniejade - 2008-01-08 21:03

specs are the same!!! look at jens sheet it says 15x x2 master's sheet also says 15 x 2 for continuous power that 50 watt rating is crap no way can that unit hit a legit 50 watts. not even the conion hits that.

Looks like we have some contridictory information going around. The page on the Lasonic website says 15 X 2 however the information that was supposedly copied from the information at CES is quoted as 12 X 2. Information copied from Lasonic at CES

Ernie your right, the 50 X 2 peak music power is not likely however it was common for companies like Lasonic to make those claims in the 80's. Can anybody remember 1000 watt amps and speakers from the flea markets? This stuff was common in the 80's but none of it could measure anywhere close to the claims.

tpr - 2008-01-08 23:54

that's true ol masterblaster, two different descriptions!

The fist one I posted is a screenshot fom a pdf file which was available till last week from the
lasonic web site(not available anymore-disappeared),and now there`s a hint on the site referring to theCES,so theese specs seem to be the correct ones ....

charlesdickens - 2008-01-09 07:40

I think it will be cheap, but I am still overly excited to actually hold a brand new ghetto blaster in my hands. It will be nice to be able to take this box out and NOT have to worry about it. I take some of my boxes out skateboarding and I hate even turning my back to them. With then new 931 I can take it out and just treat it like a regular radio, but with style! It's gonna be GREAT! I honestly don't expect much from it, but that's ok with me. I am thrilled!!!!! Now I can keep my 1st edition safely at home.

masterblaster84 - 2008-01-09 07:55

Very well said CharlesDickens, I feel the same way. I'm not very comfortable strolling around with my old boxes but a new one that only cost $169, I won't think twice about using the new 931 however I want.

kski273 - 2008-01-09 07:55

I was at the LASONIC booth yesterday myself. I actually went their twice. I spoke with one of the representatives. I made sure to tell him that we have tons of people waiting from "stereo2go.com" to grab one as soon as it's available. He informed me that they will be retailing for 149 dollars and would be available in March. I'm sure this isn't news to anybody. I have a 5th generation Ipod Classic, he explained that they only support up to 4th generation currently and are hoping to have the licensing for the 5th generation by its release date. As far as the Ipod, there will be several overlays to accomodate whichever Ipod you are docking so that there won't be an awkward look.

masterblaster84 - 2008-01-09 08:08

Very cool KSK, thanks for the information. What were your impressions of the I931?

Hi KSKI237,

Great information you`ve got there,
thanks for sharing!

On the other hand:

It wonder where this guy got his box from... Big Grin possibly it fell from a truck.....

the auction ended at December 31th .

If they had put fake tweeters in the later models, then the highs wouldn't have improved.....

Earlier models= good bass, bad highs
Later models= better highs, worse bass.

kski273 - 2008-01-09 08:51

The new 931 looked great...probably a little light as far as it's' weight is concerned, batteries will take care of that problem I'm certain. They had it playing some Mariah Carey music from a memory card. I was a little disappointed to see that they scrapped the equalizer and replaced it with preset EQ buttons. If you don't have an Ipod...I'm not sure how well you would enjoy this radio. It may be more difficult placing your mp3 player in the slot and pinching the cable going to the aux input outside with the door. I would buy 2 of them myself they had about 4 different designs. Solid black, solid white and both colors with some kind of pattern throughout the radio.

P.S.
The DVD version was just a handmade design you can see the uneven cuts of plastic upon a close examination. It's a hell of a modification, but probably will not ever make it to production the representative explained.

ned.209 - 2008-01-09 10:40

they look like the original speakers.

charlesdickens - 2008-01-10 06:20

WOW! $149! Even better!!!!

Sweet! I'll be gettin' about 7 of these then: 2 for home (1 black, 1 white), 1 for work, and the other 4 (2 black, 2 white), I'll put on ice!

jimski - 2008-01-10 15:32

I like this aproach from lasonic, allthou i was never really a fan of the 931 i was a 777z man but im all in now.

monolithic - 2008-01-10 15:38

Yeah, you've gotta admit that with a $149 street price, there's absolutely no reason not to get at least one of these, even if it does turn out to sound like crap!

jovie - 2008-01-11 00:51

It looks as though the analog tuner band at the top is totally decorative.I am hoping at least it will light up to reflect what station is in the digital display. If it doesn't that would be quite annoying (sort of like a car with a fake hood scoop).I'm thinking the black looks better. The abundance of color makes the white one look a little garish. The TRC-931 in the flash banner looks nicer to me (though a bit on the plain side).Hopefully they will have a complete assortment of insets for all of the Ipods. It would seem a better idea to sell from their website if their are options for the docking area.Lets hope it has real tweets and is loud!

tpr - 2008-01-11 06:19

yep in the foreground there are some different docks to see- but as the representative mentioned ,not yet for the newest ipod generation.(or they need another licence)The scale seems to be without rope, just led`s so hopefully it is`t just an "alibi"-radio.
