Philips Original Boombox

Well, everyone's having a go these days, JVC, Sharp, Lasonic (are they still in business?), et al, & here is an effort from Philips:
http://www.philips.co.uk/c/aud...FAD2427F.app121-drp1
I'd not seen it before today - maybe I've had my head in a bucket, or something.
It's dimensions, it's 2 x 4" drivers & the 6 C-cells put it in the small end of mid-size.
I swear I can't work out whether you can play CDs on it. Spec talks about 'CD System', but the manual shows nothing about where to put a disc.
Anyone know?
Things that put me off, however, are:
- No tone control whatsoever apart from a bass-boost switch. This is all sorts of wrong, IMHO.
- Spec says it'll only play mp3s up to 256 kbps?
- Price - it's currently £120 (a Philips CD/cassette is a third of that price). For £50 it might be worth a punt.

Yes, it plays CD's. The front lid is a CD player.
Wait, it doesn't. Well, there is a gray version without Bluetooth that takes CD's.

I just think what proper old boomboxes I could buy for £120...in my case a JVC M70 and and Sharp GF9191 (in total for both)...and I quickly lose interest in something like this!
Looks quite cool though, the styling is pretty close to old skool, just depends what it sounds like

if they are anything like the tdk 2/3 in twelve months they will be on the bay for a tenner.

If it sounds anything like the 8614 then I would love one

Do you have a link to info on that version?

Imo Philips ( besides Lasonic which is a replica )
made the closest exapmple
to old school bboxes with this one.
Now this for 120 is quite expensive.
When the price drops then i can discuss it again.

Why do manufacturers nowdays seem to put so much efort into making something look so poorly made.
elektroneko - 2013-07-30 05:06

Thx Tobi
Now I know the model number I've found the UK web page:
http://www.philips.co.uk/c/cd-...ng-7-w-os685_05/prd/
So:
- Philips OS685/05: CD player, no Bluetooth, 7 watts max
- Philips OS690/10: No CD, Bluetooth, 12 watts max
That's a bit more like it for me. CD player & still with the USB & 3.5mm Aux in. Shame that the output power is down from 12 to 7 watts.
I'd like to see one first hand before judging the build. The lack of tone control beyond the DBB switch is still a killer for me though.

Hi I am new on hear, I love retro Boom Box and radio cassette Recorders - when I saw the CD version Argos has the MP3 version only I had to get the CD Version .
I can recommend it it music quality is brilliant it has FM Radio and front mounted CD Player a socket for Mp3 players and a USB socket
The down sides for me it dues not have a Cassette Recorder and the Radio duse not have the AM Band - Last year I got the Bush Boom Box which is more powerful and has a Ipod dock and FM radio although the sound is good from it the radio is not very good on most station - This not a problem for the Phillips Boom Box . It says on the box its a homage to a 1982 Phillips boom box. I hope this is a start of a trend

I wonder which one?
The tweeters look distinctive. Damn, I wish I still had access to the BBDB.
These days it would be an app...

robertl - 2014-01-13 14:02
from Kay's mail order catalogue in the UK , they tend to get new things first before they become available in the shops
