I put the hobby on a long hibernation a few years ago. i recently started activly looking . yesterday i hit big. i caught a JVC the one with biphonic it has two white meters above the cassette and 3 lights between the meters cassette buttons on front silver bar under deck buttons black around speakers silver on top with sliders on top . it went for high prices a few years ago and was on the _grail_ list. i got it for a steal . as usual it may need cassette belts . i will get the actual model number in a bit .
ok the model number is JVC RC-838JW11

I have one of those.....Outstanding tuner, very sensitive with great reception, and great looking......But the sound is very dissapointing. No bass whatsoever.

Amazing build quality and looks, but poor sound. I hate the sliders too.
YES thats the one. thankx for the warning on lack of bass . thats a bit of a dissappointment but i know long before it arrives what to expect.
It's still a classic.
There are many types of music out there that sound great using this box. Instead of just pointing out the weeknesses in a box, Focus on it's attributes for a more rewarding listening experience.
It's too easy to be a HATER.

we always focus on biggest, best, loudest etc. every vintage box has some subtle something going on. finding out what that something is makes the hobby fun.
I thought the bass wasn't bad at all on the one I had.
It's the one thing I like about getting new boxes, see how it sounds, and I like to test it on all the old music I used to play on the cheap boxes I did have back then.
Also on the subject of bass MANY boomboxes i have or had lacked bass thru speakers. However in most cases plugging a good pair of cans into the headphones jack deleivered good bass. my most serious listening is done thru headphones so if bass is lack luster thru speakers i can live with it. yes all boxes have both weak and strong points . its great to know what to expect BEFORE it arrives .
it arrived today SQ is horrid and there is NO bass it even sounds like poo when i tried a good pair of cans. even my sony cfd-g505 rain circles around it. i wont even be bothering with this one anymore one of the worse i ever had.
