hello gang
after my disaster jvc purchase yesterday it looks like things have picked up slightly for me.
well, been to barnsley 2nd hand and collectors market today. at first i thought there was nothing there for me. a few old midis, modern eggs and the like. but then, under a load of old bits and bats i see a speaker protruding out.i ask the stallholder to pull it out for me.and out pops a little saisho boombox with built in tv.its an stv990, and i estimate its about 1985/86 in year. guess how much i paid. just 2 quid, cos the stallholder didnt know if it worked.
i was happy to pay that and so went home to test my new puppy.
under all the dirt and dust, it looks like it will clean up real good. the radio works, volume's a little crackly but nothing a bit of cleaner woulnt fix. deck is dead, probably new belt needed- tape plays for a few seconds and gives up the ghost. the tv works- lovely picture - black and white- but the sound makes a large humming noise?! hopefully itll fix up.
you guys on the continent and beyond may not know this, but saisho was dixons electricals own brand in the 80s. how many of you non uk members have saishos?
anyway, alls well in my world again.

I take it they still broadcast TV where you are at? Do you have any pics of your new box?
Sounds like you've got yourself a good deal Andy!!!
After a few minor repairs, your little mini will be as good as new!!!
I've never heard of Saisho here in the States, but did they ever make Big Boxes?
Good Luck to Ya!!!

Ok everyone?
ill try for pics as soon as lasonic mate.kballenger53, hi, the saisho is a nice little thing.a bit basic, but nice nevertheless. yes they did make big boxes, in the component 3 piece form only, please look back on bendycats posts for some excellent examples (with pics) in his collection- i dont have the direct link to the page, sorry.
saisho were an own brand of an electrical retailer we had here in england called dixons. they werent always considered for their sheer quality, but i have a small p929 component version that sounds really good for its tiny size. i dont think theyre considered desirable enough, which probably explains why you dudes in the states havent seen/heard of them before.if you go on ebay uk they do crop up from time to time, if you want one but can work out something for the shipping costs with the owner. but then again i detest ebay. you might not tnough.
A.

This is quite a big one, I don't know the model number though.
The biggest was the PT-770 I think.
Isolator42 might be a good person to ask about Saisho's. The above picture was his I think, as is the box in the pic.
WWWOOOWWW!!! I guess that answers my question!!! It looks like it can really Kick Butt!!!

ehh nice 1 andy, i once had a saisho a few year back again with the detatchables
not a bad box average in size like the hitachi 3d,s and with a decent sound, mine was also from a charity shop, a few weeks later i was watchin the original 80s bulls eye on challenge and guess what!! my saisho was a prize on there, and mr bowen described it as state of the art
, well come on it was 1987
iiiiiiiiiiiiiiin one
ya cant beat a bit a bully
the saishos long gone lav loo!went to the tip about 4 months ago!or you'd have had it!
saishos are not really my thing andy
the saisho was red no7 i think, hey thats not all mate, bully,s special prize was an m70
, hope ur well mate.
very well lav-lovin this summer sunshine!
think itll be soon time to take the 5500 round the block to blast some tunes for the hood.
meanwhile the 5600 is at home doing its thing keeping the 5500 and 8155 company.
now then-looking forward to the day i find my m70-or tpr950-or even gf 9494/96.
but once these are scored my collecting days WILL be over, and my sitting back and appreciating days will begin.
im still staring lovingly at the 5600,5500 and 8155.
just cant get enough, as depeche mode once sang.
will have to have a phone natter soon mate, when i get me phone fixed/topped up.
andy.
eh glad u like the 3 boxes mate, the 5500 was hard to part with it is 1 of my favourites
, i know this is a blaster site in general but they was,nt the only thing good to come out of the 80s
, that song u mentioned above by depeche mode was a classic and sounds great through a blaster
, ye will have phone chat soon mate.
top dog song, by depeche mode- i also grace my panny's with nik kershaw, bon jovi, tears for fears, michael jackson, and a bit of disco nites-compilation tape from 1980-has all the big late 70s disco tunes on it-you just cant beat it!(and theres a song in there somewhere too
)
totally agree with u andy, i play nothing but 80s synth pop, electro, and a bit of late 80s house music, hit house, bomb the bass e.t.c. these classics really push ur woofers to the max
isolator42:
..A Saisho.
Now, before you click off elsewhere, thinking "damn, he's really lost it now - first with the 3D obsession, now it's cr4p like Saisho", hang on a sec.
This is one Saisho that isn't cr4p at all.
I only knew this because my brother owned one, after his Bush 7070 & before his Panasonic RX-DT610... he liked his b-boxes detatchable.
Saisho was the in-house brand for the "Dixons" UK high-street electrical retailers (like "Realistic" was for Tandy / Radio Shack). Ther was plenty of truly awful, cheap & nasty gear branded Saisho - have a look at the Saisho stuff in the BBDB... dear oh dear, what a shower of sh1te.
All Saisho stuff was rebranded "black-box" stuff, so amongst the grimness, believe it or not there was some decent stuff. I've no idea who originally made this one, but I've seen versions of it from across the pond branded JCPenny & Silver (dreem has one - I wonder where he is now?).
Anyway, here it is, in all it's 80s graphics-laden glory....
If still sceptical (can't say I blame you), the feature-count might convince:
- real tweeters
- Dolby on both decks
- separate motors for each deck
- 5 band EQ
- loudness
- stereo wide (which sounds nice, for a change)
- proper metal & CrO2 switches for each deck (work for playback & record)
- power (not VU) level meters which switch to battery power/tuning level
- phono in
...& IMHO, the clincher (for an audio system): it actually sounds good. Sure, it's no match for equivalently specced gear with a decent brand (JVC, Aiwa), but that stuff was all twice the price & more - I remember that much.
It's very loud with a decent amount of bass too. When I had it apart, there was a big heatsink & evidence of BTL amplification.
Those graphics are 100% Saisho 80s cheese - you might even like them...? The high/lo-light for me is the "Continuous Play" graphic (bottom left) made to look like auto-reverse...
Here's why I'm indebted to Retro:
RA put me onto an eBay auction for it, listed as "working condition unknown". First one I've ever seen on eBay, so I was all over it. When it arrived, sure enough - DOA. Not a sausage.
Took it apart & couldn't see any failures or damage. Not good. I ploughed on with all the usual air duster, switch cleaner in there, & slowly, things started working. Oh, joy when that happens! Anyone who repairs will know what I mean. I persevered & by 1am it all works. Well, a couple of the meter LEDs don't light, but I'm no miracle worker. I just wanted to hear it again.
...the wife hated it on sight, of course.
thats the saisho t909:

words well spoken tpr, i totally agree with you there on the saisho brand
, lets hope andy takes note then maybe he will move a step up the ladder and walk by the saishos and like, these boxes i see quiet a lot and if you don,t pass them by just for the sake of a score, your house ends up full of junk and then your left with the problem of gettin rid
but having said that saisho was,nt alone when it came to making c**p boxes
check out the crown sz 5100, probably the most cheaply made box i ever owned, not a bad looker though.

The other load of dog doo to avoid is Matsui,
this is the in house brand of Curry's, which is also part of the Dixon group.
This was a ploy by this company to hoodwink the general public into thinking they are buying a japanese product, ditto with the Saisho brand, crafty buggers
yeah man, ive learnt my lesson with saisho.ill never own any more-had 3,and believe me that was three too many!
Whilst I would agree that much of Saisho's stuff was truly grim & the cheapest in the shop for good reason, some of thier pricier stuff was rebranded electronics from somewhere other than the toilet.
The T909 is no Aiwa/JVC/etc. chaser, but considering the price & feature-count it's not half bad.
hey i42 ill take your word for it mate
