hi chaps and chapesses!
what are your thoughts on the above model. just got one yesterday for a fiver at a car bootless sale. i think it sounds the best in my entire collection. but the play button on the deck is stuck on. is it worth me having it professionally repaired on this model? your thoughts please!

I had that problem with a philips box because it had that RTS button system and a good spray with switch spray did the trick..after taking it to bits tho

not sure if i want to do the repair myself in case i break it. was weary with it having a servo system wether it would be like thr tpr990s deck to fix- impossible. im gonna see how much itll cost for my cousins husband to fix it hes a qualified electrician. while hes in there he can replace the belts too for good measure.this machine sounds awesome and i want it to have pride of place.

Andy,the philips deck is no where near as complicated as the TPR990,no deck i've ever seen is as stupid as the 990 deck..what i can say about the Philips deck is it is quite plastcky and looks slightly fragile..i've never seen a deck with stuck play but i have had a philips where the play wont stay in,that was due to a worn catch,all i could do to fix it was make a new edge by scraping it with a screw driver..

The d8534 is one of my favourites!
The tapedeck is servocontrolled.
Try a careful cleaning.
It´s worth to save this box!

Yes yes and yes it is worth to save and repair it, one of the best sounding Philips BBX´s :-) enjoy it .

thanks for all the positive comments on this box,my friends. it is a beauty. im that in love with it im not sure i can top this. the sound, is so natural, so clear and with the graphic equalizer you can really adjust the bass and treble to exactly how you want it. ive never had one but im guessing this box is similar in sound and looks to the sharp gf575. anybody with the 575 want to confirm this for me?

btw vienna, you seem to be a bit of an expert with these philips machines, so tell me this one. have seen pics of the d8534 in black all over with crome speaker surrounds, ive seen it in silver with a black facia and silver handle, but mines in silver with a black facia-and a black handle! is it rare, or was it for a different market- i know it cant be u.s because they were magnavox, but the girl on the stall i got it off was australian? could it be an aussie one- and if so, how can i tell? i knew i should have asked her its history!!!!

no, mines definately a d8534 as its written on the cassette door saying so- written there by philips when it was built. heres something: could the handle have broken during its early life and somebody has replaced it with a black one rather than a silver one? mind you on saying that the area around the handle is also black- the mount for the handle- and that looks like its built into the back panel. plus there is no apparent damage to the box to suggest its been dropped in its life- ie no splits, cracks or serious damage. so it is a mystery. if you get chance vienna take a look at i dont know from sweedens d8534- his is all over black!

Looks so, there made some strange differences in small series...

Mmmm, Dolby, 3 band EQ, servo deck, Spatial, 3pc, all very nice.
Near top of the range for Philips in 1984 this one, only topped by the enormous D8644 (wooden spkrs, 70watts & probably twice the price of this one).
Don't forget that companies like Philips always "reserve the right to change & improve without notice". Like putting a different coloured handle on if they ran out of one type.
As for the D8535 - that's almost certainly exactly the same model from 1985 or 86, with a different colour scheme. Lots of companies did stuff like that, especially with the more expensive models, like this one.

If I were you, I'd have a tentative go at fixing the deck. Take your time, note where everything goes & don't *force* anything - it'll be easier than you think. It sounds like putting in a new belt & cleaning everything you can will probably have this deck good as new. Philips decks are amongst the easier ones to work on, even the servo decks.

nice to hear your input about the philips. it doesnt cease to amaze me this one. every song that comes on the radio sounds fantastic. it really is a machine to treasure.
now if only i could get bendybikes d8644 off him.

keep an eye on eBay - they come up every now & then. Despite their price, they were still cheaper than similar "transportable" offerings from the likes of Sony, etc. They were from the "put a midi system in a box" type of boomer & sound all the better for it

cant see your catalogue- bloody library computer- and no one start on me about getting a bloody computer cos i cant afford a camera let alone a computer!!!!!!!
