I was just wondering about the insane prices boxes goes for on ebay and such. I mean several hundreds, even for broken ones! Damn that's sick! If one had access to dumps and electronics recycling plants one could make som e seroius buck$. There goes ALOT of boxes "in the thrash". One guy told me (he is a carpenter) that always when they go to the dump with some building site waste, they find a boombox/radio. Once he found a big silver Sharp he told me but there was something wrong with it so he threw it back. Who is paying big money for stuff like this?
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE boomboxes but I'm not loving them that much. I would never be willing to pay hundreds for one. 30 euros is already a pain. Of course there are exeptions... but I am talking about standard boxes now.
The people who remember boomboxes from their youth are old enough to be making good money, thus the willingness to pay high prices.

Higher prices was going to happen anyways.
Even thrift stores seem to be catching on.
I seen over priced boxes at the thrift store.
It was like what happened to the thrift-price ??
Thrift stores have finally figured out what the rest of us have known for some time: namely, that a growing number of their customers aren't low income folks who buy household essentials at inexpensive prices (what thrift stores were intended for). Thrift stores have become warehouses for eBay sellers who "flip" inexpensive items to make a profit.
Once stores figure that out, they decide, "Why not make that money ourselves?" Which is why they've gotten better at spotting collectibles and pricing them accordingly. I have no problem with that. At least, the charity that sponsors the store gets the cash instead of some slick Internet businessman.
...it's all about supply and demand. That will drive the price for anything. I never put a limit on what I will spend for something I really want, especially if it is something that will never be made again....but to each his own...
May I add they really dont make em like they used to!
ebay is a rip off.totally. and the rest of it is catching on. my cf320 mono cost me a fiver yesterday-and its close to deaths door cosmetically-i got it cos i love monos.and when the machines turn up at the charity shops theyre only the woefully basic ones.knocked back a cheap toshiba rt 61 something this morning-black all over-slightly bigger cousin of the rt80-and i currently have about 4 of these derivatives in stock.so ive left it.point is gone are the days when i got my 9090 and 525 from the charity shops.its always the low low rent stuff now. which is fine if its a decent make of sony/panasonic/aiwa/sharp etc-but even then they all made basic ones.

Ebay Has Got a Bit Silly of late..Prices have gone to the sky,i have'nt seen it like this before..
well here's a few tasty auctions, some prices are ok,some slightly expensive, and some down right ridiculous, but it is'nt the sellers, they are only asking what they are happy with..
Sony FH55 £200

well those are the prices the sellers are asking. As a seller you can never bump up a price only down. And judging buy those boxes, since they look in really good condition, they may get bought. There are people out there that have money and will spend a large amount on mint box. its the same with cars. I think most people on this site are hobbiests and collectors and are looking for a deal.
There are people with money and want cool shat to shine people on with. And they want it now.
Plus its a style thing to. Ghettoblasters are in. You say it with the lasonic ipod ghettoblaster. It stood as a symbol of music in the 80's. NOw its the Ipod that is the symbol of music with its signiture white ear buds.
Its crazy. I was in the sony store and they have all these ipod docking stations for the ipod. but if i asked if they have docking stations to plug just any mp3 player in (like their own mp3 player), the don't!!. They told me, their docking stations only play for the ipod. So when you buy a docking station to play music, u also have to have the ipod to go along with it (not a cheap mp3 player). And to up load the music you gots to go out and buy the computer to load up the songs to the computer plus the software to prevent viruses on the computer while you down load music as well as get net access (usually i find kids get the ipod the start naggin their parents for their own personal computer which as to be a mac).
hmmm looking at about 1000 bucks there.
or
a old school boom box (that prob has better sound than the docking station) thats around 400 bucks and fully working and all pretty much self contained. or get a more recent kaboom.
Im just so sick of seeing my friends at parties playing music of their ipod/computer through computer speakers. grosss!!
^ Well keep in mind that MOST boomboxes don't sound very good. It's not that hard to buy a computer speaker/subwoofer set for about $150 that will blow away all but the best boomboxes. Your friends must have cheaped out and bought $35 speakers from Walmart.
And there are lots of docking stations with a 3.5mm input jack for an MP3 player. The only difference is, you might not be able to select songs from the docking station -- You would have to do it from the mp3 player.
Also, you don't need a Mac to use iTunes.
I was kinda only thinking the best boom boxes like the sharp's.
Actually i was thinking of best buy. only speakers i think that are good there are the bose and the sony x-plod boom box, best buy is usually one up from wall mart, but they sell mostly low end items because like walmart, people go to them for cheap electronics. But i found at best buy they only had ipods for sale, and i think one other mp3 player that was low stocked and tucked into a corner. Everything is geared toward the i pod.
And yeah most poeple that have a mac, don't actually really need to by a high end computer. but its the shat to shine other people on. But i always find out my friends (unless gamers) get high quality everythinig but cheap out on the speakers.
In Australia boxes are just atarting to take off. Still plenty of good stuff at flea markets, garage sales and op-shops. We must be lucky down here.
I wrote on this forum some time ago that the whole boombox thing was ripe for a revival. Maybe that's what we are seeing in these prices.
The forum members here would only pay two/three hundred pounds for a mint grail, but we are collectors who know what is good and what isn't.
For the young who never lived through the boombox thing it maybe different and I get a sense that these sellers are trying to tap into that area. Remember that there are quite a few boomboxes on videos directed at the young now and they have no chance of getting them because the old classics are not made anymore.
I don't think anyone will buy those at those prices myself. What do you think guys (and girls possibly)?

Unbelievable!! Is this some sort of scam? They are nice boxes for sure and they are in good condition. My 777 was in fair condition and it was nowhere near some of those prices and it was bought in May last year.
Something really wierd is going on.
When I have the money avalible i would buy at high prices. Just because They are really hard to find where i am and are getting harder to find. I also know that I can flip it to make a profit i would buy it at that price. I can easily make people see the value of the boom box. they are constantly seen in pop art fashion today. and to have the original means something more. Everyone has an ipod now. but not everyone has a boom box. so if you break out a boom box more people are gona comment and look at it than an ipod.
I was eyeing that vz 2000 on ebay, to bad it was in london, but its been the best condition one thats gone up in a long time. Hence the price. I find there are alot of good boom boxes that are sold on ebay from united kingdom, that don't always for of a lot because of pound. I don't want to pay 300 canadian dollar in shipping on items from united kingdom.
But right now its a style thing. They are hard to find and usually every major boom box has in some way over the years, been endoresed by a celebrity.
Also the boom box ear is making a comeback. Run DMC shirts are being printed again. cartoon shows from back then are being made into movies (transfomers, gi joe etc..). Its because that generation is moving up in the work force. Hence increase in prices.
They are also becoming antiques. Its like vintage video games, if you still have it in the box people want it beacuse it was from their childhood.
There are people out there with money. Im surprised I can sell my boxes in my home town and make a profit.
Here's a good example of what is still coming up in Aussie op-shops (Thrift shops) at a bargain price. This sanyo 9930k cost me ten dollars. Just needed a clean up. Is a tape eater though. Any help to correct this problem would be appreciated.
Someone just bought an almost Mint Gf-777 for £175 here in London. I can't be that bad.

Common problem with Sanyos. Needs belts and maybe the drive clutch needs cleaning and/or the clutch disk surface slightly deglazed.
Thank you Stormin Normin for the advice. I will attend to it.
Condition is everything. When you see a mint grail, you are going to be going up against multi millionaire collectors. IN the past we have been spoiled, but now its time to lower our standards and look for that Box with imperfections at a good/best/better price.
Me personally, I like mint stuff!
