saxonman - 2009-12-28 03:47

yes I've finaly got myself a big Sharp the gf 767 the little brother of the 777!! and what a box almost perfect condition and sounds brilliant and very loud I'm very pleased with it but i have got a couple of questions!

what is "cut" on the tape deck means ?
and where can I get that little bit for the grill??
thanks this is my first "real" boombox!!

geoffhartwell - 2009-12-28 04:50

congrats man, great box

retro.addict - 2009-12-28 05:01

Congrats on your new box, I have the 777 and it's an amazing radio.

Does anyone know how the 767 compares to the 777 in sound?

2steppa - 2009-12-28 05:05

What a stunner, amazing machine. You must be feeling pretty elated over that pickup.

Regarding your question, I can't answer conclusively as I don't own a 767 (I wish!) but I wonder if 'cut' is the same as 'record mute'?

Only a guess as others on here could answer based on first hand experience.

saxonman - 2009-12-28 05:07

yer I would love to know aswel!!! and what feature's am I missing!!I would have loved to buy a 777 but the prices for 777 in poor condition on ebay were too high and everyone I looked at had some form of problem and you had to pay £300+ for em!!! yes 2steppa well pleased with it thanks

geoffhartwell - 2009-12-28 05:46

just had a look at my 767 and the cut button is used when you cue ff or rw, simply if tape is in play mode you can ff or rw and press cut to resume normal play again, there are loads of features the the 777 has that the 767 dont a few are tape echo, tape fader, mic fader, supper woofer vol, mix mic, twin vu, and there are more

2steppa - 2009-12-28 06:10

Wow, I never realised the 767 had a single VU meter.

saxonman - 2009-12-28 06:15

interesting geoff thanks for the info!!! mostly recording features then !!for the eighties bootlegger!!

geoffhartwell - 2009-12-28 07:13

stbnyc - 2009-12-28 20:17

Eek are you serious??? i got one on a saturday. the 767.. heres a quick pic. i will get a knob for the volume. i have different types in storage so i'll be good

saxonman - 2009-12-29 00:50

oh yes it was gld!!! Well done on the 767 STBNYC is it all working?

gld - 2009-12-29 03:11

Wow. It did look unused.

I am glad someone on here got it.

I don't know how they compare to the 777 but I heard one many years ago '84. A friend of my cousins owned it. In terms of the sound, well put it this way, there were a few people who stopped and looked in bemusement (he had it pretty much full wack). IT WAS JUST SO LOUD for a boombox.

He also attached a red carry strap; the contrast with the blue just looked too cool!!

One this with this series is that even though it is not louder that other boomboxes, it seems to be able to throw the sound quite a distance. Does any one else notice this?

meljak - 2009-12-29 03:49

I dont own one but I believe one vital diference is that the 767 uses a piezo tweeter and the 777 uses a 'proper' one - I would think that the screw holes would be there already to do the swap - from what I remember seeing some pics on here, the tweeters are the most common size (about 2"?) used on blasters in general. This would in my opinion be a worthwile tweak to release the full potential of a box like this.

gld - 2009-12-29 04:09

There are a few differences:

-Bass speakers have seperate volume controls on the 777
-Mike has echo and Mike mix
-There is a Tape crossfader on the 777
-The 767 has Piezoelectric tweeters and the 777 has real ones (but they are not very good either).
-The APSS is different on the 777

Further to what Meljak said, one guy replaced his tweeters with real Dayton ones. After this mod he only had to turn the treble to just short of the half way mark to get the same effect as the treble on 10 with the old tweeters.

saxonman - 2009-12-29 04:59

I love the apss light!!!another question what are the blanked out holes on the top right left of the central speakers????? My old mate said when he got his in the eighties it was "the thing to do" was to drill them out!!!!!!!!!!

gld - 2009-12-29 05:25

That's where the volume controls for each centre speaker are placed on the 777.

brigadier.vytas - 2009-12-29 05:34

id say they sound pritty much the same but the 777 does have a warmer bass due to the super woofer vol control

gld - 2009-12-30 13:42

I find the super woofer volume controls on of the most useful features when using the 777 at high volume and keeping distortion down.

The outer and inner speakers put out different kinds of bass. There are just so many options for modifiying the sound because of those two controls. My GF is modified but the above is the observation I made when the original speakers were in.

isolator42 - 2010-01-13 11:28

Nice pickup on the GF767 Mark.
So, what's the story on the outer woofers, then? They don't look standard - I think the original ones didn't have silver centre dust-caps. I could be wrong of course Smile

saxonman - 2010-01-13 12:30

yes that's what i thought but it's an early one so maybe diferent.I have wondered why people say about the lack of top end because I cant see it so maybe someone has put in differnt speakers even tho the seller says not!!

blaster - 2010-01-13 12:59

Hi ISO, i think your confusing the 767 with GF-1000 with the silver dust caps on the outers...only the gf-1000 of the family is unique to that...although they do share some similar parts...like the rounded knobs and the blue grills...and the the tuning area is blue as well... Smile other than that the speakers are the same between the 767 and 777

saxonman - 2010-01-13 14:19

what i will say is that the outer speakers look good with the chrome!!It looks sooo right with them don't it!!!

isolator42 - 2010-01-14 05:52

There are 18 pics of the GF767 in my copy of the BBDB, & none have outer speakers with chrome dust-caps.
That said, I can't believe that those replacements would be detremental to the sound quality (so long as they're a similar impedance) - the originals are nothing special. Also, you're right, they do improve the looks.

My somewhat knackered GF777 has had the plastic bars removed from across the outer speakers, & so their not having silver dustcaps does look rather odd:
