im.out.of.hear - 2010-01-10 14:20

just went in my spare room where i keep my boxes,i went in to check them over and all 3 of my GF8989s have got rot/corrotion on the front brush aluminium effect panel..they look a bit of a mess..i'de love to know why it happends..

im.out.of.hear - 2010-01-11 09:11

yeah its sad chance, all mine were mint with no marks on the panels at all, they started going like that on there own,its really strange and i'm pretty gutted over it..i love the 8989,they look good, sound great..they were keepers aswell..

This happened to my beloved RC-550 too

Yep, another victim here too. Not hideously bad at first glance, but catch it in the wrong light and urrgh!! Shame, real shame.

billy.the.binman - 2010-01-11 13:52

its caused by sound vibration, it doesnt happen if you dont play the box.

damned if you do, damned if you dont.

my gf-1000 that im selling has that...but i was thinking maybe there is a way of replicating that area with maybe thin layer decal or something...at one time i thought of maybe being creative different color all together... Smile

or a doner from another box of that line may work if it lines up

i think its something to do with the changing of Temperature,or moisture in the atmosphere or something along those lines, the room that mine are in is freezing cold, they've been in there for about a year, its only started doing this since i put them in there..and andy (billy the binman) i have'nt switched them on in a long long time so i dont think its the sound thingy mate..
i would like to get a powerfull magnifying glass on one of them to have a real close look at the rott, wonder if i could coat/smudge some sort of harmless type oil on it to stop it going worse..

haha i was being daft paul (gman) it will be moisture. corrosion.

if yo put a bucket or tub of salt in the room it should draw most of the moisture away. think abut it metal gets colder than other things so the moisture will goto it.

either try that or heat the room/dehumidify it?

I have an 8989 too, are you talking about the real metal trim, or the fake metal-colored plastic?

im.out.of.hear - 2010-01-21 08:01

hi reli,i mean the fake silver brush metal effect (where the bass/treble.balance knobs are)

just looking at this stuff, wonder if it would work ?? has anyone tried it ??

you know i thought the same thing of putting on a coat of somekind of clear coat...i wonder what is it exactly that corrodes...because it seems to be behind the letters at least on mine and it doesnt affect the letters...i could feel the letters with my fingers but faded part no at all

im.out.of.hear - 2010-01-26 18:52

Warning !!
Do not try to spray the front panel with CLEAR LACQUER,i just tried it tonight on my GF575,it ruined it,,looks a right old mess now..lucky i never did it to my 777..

i think maybe a thin layer of adhesive flat aluminum foil of some kind would help its appearance but sacrificing the letters...not sure also if they make em but i use to have these rubb on letters sheets in the 80s with different sizes of the alphabet letter on the sheet....wish i could remember who made them...maybe an art or craft store would have em...
