Thanks to MONOLITHIC's post about the sort of enclosed speakers I decided to do a bit of a cabinet modification.
Yes, I understand about structural points and all that kind of good stuff. I thew caution to the wind and cut out mostly all of the tops and cut a chuck out of the sides as well of the two baffles with tin snips. Cut, cut, cut, cut, snap, snap, snap! I can hear some of you cringe at the idea, but it worked. the case is holding up just fine, and no it doesn't rattle.
The bass response is improved (especially bass guitar), but the cabaret doesn't breath as much as I wished it did. There is not enough ventilation on the back for the sound pressure to move freely. It's still an improvement, though.
Black on black didn't come out so well, but it should give you the general idea.
The first thing I did with this box is change out the AM coil. Reception was so poor that I thought there was something wrong with it. I took a look inside to discover a very minuscule AM circuit and one of the smallest antennas I've ever seen.
Thanks to MONOLITHIC for the picture.
A new longer coil bar and better coil helped quite a bit (salvaged form an old long dead stereo receiver). It's still not all that great, but it went from piratically deaf to about average.
Again I'd like to thank MONOLITHIC for the tip.
Hey, glad I could help!
I think I might (finally) break open my white on white i931 and do some cutting later today.
wow thanks for sharing and mono as well for his tips on this too...i want to try and do the same to my cabinet soon...but was wondering if the 931 model with the tape deck that came before this...if the back cover of it was the same or would it have more ventilation? and if so would it fit with these mods as well?
