Did you ever used the internal microphones of your boombox?

drmz - 2010-01-13 06:46

I´m just wondering because thats a feature that every boombox got but I never used it.
For what are the used usally?
Recording bootlegs on concerts?

Apart from testing, I don't think I've EVER actually used the built-in mics for an actual specific task. In fact these days I don't even test to see if they work.

I Agree

drmz - 2010-01-13 14:20

okay so thats 3 : 0 !
Step up internal mic fans and convince us that they are not totally useless!

I used a Sony boombox to record something musical
and I got a very good recording with it
deep bass and crisp highs
dident expect that since it was a
single microphone in it.

Yes, i used them A LOT ! to have fun and , later, to record music i was /composing/, fooling around. 3 tapes of music, grunge, alternative, reggae , lot of ideas .

Nice, its getting sticky: 3:2 Smile

Does the new Lasonic come with internal microphone? The classic TRC-931 got one.

redbenjoe - 2010-01-14 05:42

make it 3:3

we use mics when little kids are visiting-
they record their songs, poems, etc
its fun

drmz - 2010-01-14 05:56

Big Grin its a tie now.

I remember we were doing this as kids with an old tabletop tapedeck and send the tapes to our grandparents for christmas.
But we had a small microphone standing on the desk.

Good to know that the internal mics deliver decent quality.

in the 80s I was at a rock festival & saw a guy balancing a boombox on his head, recording the band playing (not a mainstage act). He would've been using the internal mics then. No idea what the boomer was but I remember it looked expensive. Later he was selling tapes of the band - turns out he was the band's sound engineer! I bought one & it sounded pretty good, considering. Reasonable full-range sound & low on distortion.
I wish I could remember what that boomer was... Smile

You actually use your boomboxes?

master.z - 2010-01-18 21:01

+1 Cool
I use it from time to time to record the drunken ramblings of my friends, when were all together just shootin' the breeze and partying. It's funny as hell when you play it back for them.
It's best when they don't realize its recording. Laugh Out Loud

you got me thinking drmz.. i think they are also made for karyoke. for double deck boomboxes, you play a tape full of instrumentals in deck B, put a blank tape on deck A, and record our singing with a book of music lyrics that go with the instrumentals being played and recored along with your voice.. did that make sence? haha. but for the single decks, they use a home casstte player for instrumental tapes connectted to the boombox's line input and the blank tapes go to the boombox to record the instrumentals and our voices at the same time. but as we already know, most of our boxes have intergrated mics

blah.blah.blah - 2010-01-19 20:29

i'm a never.

stbnyc - 2010-01-20 05:11

oh by the way i used it for spying on people conversations at my house to see how much of a backstabber they are. BLACKMAIL Nod Yes

jerryjg - 2010-01-21 00:01

the internal mics are usually matched well in terms of quality to the unit. They are auto-limiting , so they are great tio record with. Those boxes that are good enough to benefit from extrenal mics are cool thouhg. I'd love to see a thread delegated to boxes with external mics, ansd laso more info on great built in mics on lots of units.

No. Unfortunately it doesn't record. I really wish it did.

And yes I do occasionally use built-in microphones if I need to remember a phone number, address or something of the like. You know, to take notes.
When I was a child I used to use them all of the time. The idea of field recording in stereo was a bit of a novelty at the time and I was fascinated by it. I'd tape anything with separation. Cars going by, conversations with each person on a side of the box.

I took an old Realistic SCR-1C (with VU meters and record level controls) to a Black Crows and Grateful Dead show years ago. It worked quite well and sounded a lot better than I thought it would.
In case you are wondering how I walked into a concert with a tape recorder; The Dead didn't mind anyone recording their shows.

LOL.
I've done that too. Here you sit with a recorder that's the size of a small suitcase and yet people forget it's there.
It's a blast. From drunken rants to people just having a good time.

Wow memories recall seeing those boxes with the top microphones classic, I recall way back as a kid using the microphones for recording the room had to be quite for whatever sound noises in the background would be picked up on the recording, recalling telling family members hush I am taping lololo long before RCA jacks or the Din Jacks great topic thanks .
